Welcome to Merced...remember, lights out after 9pm
Welcome to Merced.
At one time Merced was just a sleepy agricultural town along the railroad line. Then, during World War 2, an air force base was built about 5 miles away in the next town. As the cold war loomed, Castle Air Force base became a major training center for the huge KC135 and B 52 bombers. Merced was right in the noisy flight path which probably made us a prime target as well. When the cold war ended, the base was closed and endless noise from overhead finally stopped. I was happy about that, but the town went into a financial chaos that took years to turn around.
Merced is situated almost in the center of California. It is 4 hours from South Lake Tahoe, 2 hours from San Francisco, 2 hours from the beaches, and 2 hours from Yosemite National park. The weather is comfortable year around.
The newest California state University is being built here. The University of California at Merced is still years from completion.
We do have a beautiful lake, great bike paths, several parks, and a casual atmosphere.
And still after all of these years of boom and bust, and a new college, there's still very little entertainment or worthwhile shopping!
That's why I go traveling!
