Modesto
When one enters Modesto, you travel beneath an arch displaying the city's motto: Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health.
I was curious about this, so I did a little reading. Modesto developed along with the railroad in 1870. Water was an important issue right off and one of the first organizations established was the 'Modesto Water Irrigation District' in 1887.
At that time a competition was held to select a town motto. One of the town citizens, Sam Harbaugh, was paid $3 for his winning entry, which is used today.
These words symbolize the role that water and agriculture have played in the development of this community. I think they are still appropriate for today.
FYI: Modesto means modesty in Spanish.
