Travel Tips for Mojave

Mojave Tip

by Yubert

Okay, this is a 'fond'memory because right after taking this photo, my truck got stuck in the soft shoulder to the right of the road.

I had my mountain bike with me so I was ready to ride for help when a 4X4 truck came along and pulled me out.

Sure is a nice view of the desert but don't know if it was worth getting stuck.

Photograph Passing Trains From Above!

by Yaqui

This is a neat tip to know especially if your a train buff or just like to take photographs. On this bridge that they built so traffic can get over because this is still a major train yard. This bridge has guarded walking path that crosses over it. They cut and framed holes in the fencing so people could take photographs of the passing trains or whatever else of the local area. I just thought that was really neat to do!

You cannot miss it if your on Highway 14, its right next to the AM PM Mini Mart and Ford Dealership. Turn at the light going east and turn left at the next street. You may want to park on the street for your vehicles safety. Still a very well traveled road by locals.

History Making Mojave Air and Space Port

by Yaqui

Mojave Airport was built in 1935 as a general facilities for locals. Then in 1942, the government bought it and it soon beccame a Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station.
Then changed hands back to the local Kern County in July 1961, to be operated as a general aviation airport and site for promotion of up and coming industries. Then in 1972 it was acquired by the East Kern Airport District and operated as the Mojave Airport, which now serves as a renowned civilian flight test center and is home to the most unique and exotic aircraft ever built such as the Voyager, Proteus and Derringer.

Just want to let those tourists know, that planes do not necessarily come here to die, but many do get refurbished for airlines, resold to others, many are just being stored here, some are used for test aspects, some even get purchased as parts or even purchased to be incorporated into an exotic luxury mansion.

Also, the movie industry films here a lot because of its wonderful desert scenery. Movies Filmed Here

SpaceShipOne built by Scaled Composites founded in 1982 by Burt Rutan (CEO) and investor philanthropist Paul G. Allen , just made aviation history. 63 year old test pilot Mike Melvill the first civilian to fly a spaceship out of the atmosphere, rocketed it's way to the 62 mile mark above Earth where the threshold of where space begins. After landing safely 90 minutes after takeoff, Mike Melvill earned the first private pilot to earn astronaut wings.

Did they move the town?

by lucythedog

"Actually they moved the road"

They built the road around Mojave instead of through it. HWY 58 now spurs around the crowded little town...I'm sure the businesses took a hit, but for travellers...its MUCH easier now. This rest area near Mojave is one of my favorites. Lots of places to check out and sniff and pee.

Tetreus's new Mojave Page

by Tetreus

The Mojave desert begins at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, NE of Los Angeles, and extends North 150 mi into the Eureka Valley and East 22 mi to rthe Colorado River. Great position uh? The Mojave, with elevations ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 tf above sea level is also known as the High Desert. North and Esat of the Mojave there is the Low Desert, the Death Valley (see the page devoted to this great place) that drops to almost 300 ft below sea level and contains the lowest spot on land in the western hemisphere...

The Mojave Desert is a sprawling space but many of its visitable attractions are situated on a N-S axis along U.S. 395 and Highway 178.
