More about Best Western Victorian Inn
Fair value, nothing special
A clean, comfortable room with a gas fireplace, but not really vitorian more like motel with garden sub-level garage and room with some basket-weaved modern decorations. Decent breakfast bar. Just an affordable place to stay in Monterey nearby everything (short drive, short walk to canery). Off the shore with no special view from lower level room (perahaps some from 2nd level rooms that face the bay 2 blocks away)
Stayed at hotel sunday 1-23-2005 They gave us a room on third floor as "concierge " ; but never could figure out what that offered ? Caution : Before departing we ordered roll-away and they said it could not be brought to third floor, but that a window seat was almost as big as a twin bed and they would make that up as a bed for our 13 year old teen. Window seat was 24" width and the stiff smelly drapes were hanging right into it so the poor girl could not sleep there... Thank god we brought a sleeping bag as she just slept on the floor.
Beds : they said two full but both seemed narrower ? and the featherbed pads did not make up for the poor mattress quality.
Room was burning hot then really cold off and on all night but we could not affect it with the thermostat - seemed to be acting on it's own in a preset manner. The victorian theme is misleading. The lobby is in a victorian home looking part of building but rest of property and all rooms are in standard motel / hotel buildings. Victorian decor is looking a bit shabby and old and dusty. Very Close to Cannery Row / Aquarium - and it had a gas fireplace kids liked - a 4 on a 10 scale - we'll try another place next time.
Not an Inn, Only a Hotel
Description is deceiving. The only thing Victorian about the hotel is the lobby and sitting area, which is very small, for breakfast. There was not enough seating. Only about four or five seating areas. People were standing about while eating. It is actually a hotel/motel. There are no bathrobes in the rooms, although we were led to believe that there were and no feather beds and down conforters, we found out later that that's only on the 3rd floor. We paid $20.00 more per night for vaulted ceilings! And upon check out found out the other guests didn't have to pay for parking in the garage, we paid $21.00 per night. Talked to the front desk about it and they apologized but were not very concerned. Sometimes a small token is better than nothing. Next time we will stay at the Hilton - not much difference in price, but at least you know what your paying for...
Inn was way over priced
My husband and I Planned a romantic getaway to Monterey. We were looking for a Hotel with a personal touch worthy of a name such as "The Victorian". We saw advertisements depicting ornate furniture and wall coverings that are common with a Victorian style. We anticipated a room consistent with this style. We instead found a motel 6 with a lobby that had been dressed up with a few window treatments and knock-off furniture. The room had no decor to speak of that was remotely Victorian. This was a signifigant disappointment. We were told the Fisherman's wharf was within walking distance. I suppose it is technically within walking distance if one wanted to walk for a half an hour to reach their destination! The staff was prompt, freindly and helpful. We enjoyed the wine and appetizers served in the late afternoon. The quality of the continental breakfast was excellent. All in all, when considering the cost of our room we left with an overwhelming sense of missrepresentaion and disappointment.
A good deal...
My husband and I stayed in this Best Western in May while traveling down the coast and were pleased with the accommadations. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the staff friendly, and the location great for walking to the aquarium and Cannery Row (though beware of the overpriced, poor quality restaurants that line the Row). The breakfast went beyond our expectations--big selection for a Continental. It seems that other reviewers on this message board were thrown by the word "Victorian" in the name--this is definitely not a quaint B&B. However, we got a good deal on the rooms and would return for the same price.
We loved it!
We've just returned from two nights at the Best Western Victoria Inn. We arrived with guarded expectations after reading some of the reviews but we were pleasantly surprised! I would have to say it was the "best" Best Western we've stayed at. The room was very clean as well as the bathroom. The beds were comfortable as they had a feather bed topper! The hotel was full and there were lots of kids and I was afraid that we would be bothered by noise. Nope. We couldn't hear our neighbors at all. We had a room on the top floor and had a nice vaulted ceiling and also a nice window seat. If you get rooms on the bottom floors, you also get a little patio. The wine and cheese reception was nice - the wine was good as well as the cheese - and the continental breakfast was good with bagels, breads, muffins, fruits and good coffee. The only complaint I would have is with the small size of the "breakfast room." It was difficult to find a spot to sit. The staff was curtious and helpful. We will certainly return to this hotel for our next trip to Monterey. Oh, and it is only about three block walk to Cannery Row.
Just Another Chain
Buyer beware - this is just another best western...and an overpriced one at that. I must admit, we thought we would be staying in a more quaint and unique inn due to the name and description on the website. Unfortunately, that's not the reality of the Victorian Inn. It is a generic best western, not a boutique hotel, as the website might lead you to believe. Granted, it is a nice best western, but one shouldn't book a room there thinking it is anything other than that. However, I agree that the continental breakfast is good.
There are any number of nice, luxurious hotels, inns and b & bs in Monterey- the town is virtually chock full of them. If you are willing to spend this much on a room, you can get something much nicer in this town. I recommend the Jabberwock, Spindrift Inn, or any number of others. If you are looking for a motel chain, choose another, more economical one. The Monterey Bay Lodge is good for families, convenient, and much more reasonably priced.
very cozy stay
We truly enjoyed our stay overnight at this very clean, cozy hotel. Having the fireplace was a real relaxer after a day of driving up the coast. It was very clean, beds were comfortable and the continental breakfast had a delicious selection of foods. Our room had two bathroom sinks which is always nice. On the down side, our room was very far away from the convenient handicap parking, but we arrived late so that most likely couldn't be helped. We would definitely stay here again.
Great Hotel for a trip with the kids
We just stayed at the Victorian Inn for an overnight trip with our 2 small children to visit the Monterey Aquarium. We were extremely happy with the hotel. The room was quite large, the beds comfortable, and we were at the back of the hotel which was very quiet at night, even with our slider open. The continental breakfast was perfect for a family with kids--cereals, bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, juice milk, etc. We ate in the breakfast room, but trays were available to take breakfast back to your room. We booked an Aquarium package, which included two adult 2-day tickets, and were very happy with the nightly cost. Walking distance to Cannery Row. We will definitely stay there again.
