We stayed only 1 night in Monterey and we picked the Holiday Inn express at Monterey Bay, for the simple reason it was cheap. We found the hotel clean but basic and it was a little further from Cannery row than we wanted ( approx 2 miles), but we jumped in the car and were there in 5 mins. The hotel is very close to the beach, 5 mins walk. There is also the usual Starbucks at the Traffic lights at the end of the block.
You get a free buffet breakfast which was good and there is a pool, but you would have to go on the net to find more info. There is a fitness room with cycle and weight machines, ask at reception its free.
As a short stop over it was ok, but for longer you may find it lacking.
