Place to stay in or near Monterey

by davidschmaus

Hi, My wife and (11Y) son are going to Monterey the first week of April. We have friends that live there so will be spending time visiting with them. We have a place on hold to stay at the Navy Lodge for $75 a night including tax. My wife was wondering if we should get a place a little nicer. I told her maybe we could find a nice place outside of Monterey. Maybe like a bed and breakfast. Any ideas? Thank you!

We lived in the Monterey area for two years while my husband was at the PG school which I'm assuming is somewhere near where the Navy Lodge is. Most accommodations that you are going to find near that area are going to be more expensive.

Examples advertised as B&Bs:
Old Monterey Inn which is a B&B and one of three similar properties- $219/night and up
Merritt House (continental breakfast) $119/night and up with continental breakfast and $15/day parking charge
Lamp Lighter and Sunset Inn properties up in Seaside with a light basket breakfast and free parking (which you will need being that far out) the cheapest will be $185/night

The least expensive that I saw was a semi-chain - the Best Western Monterey Inn - $119/night and up

All of these are just rooms for two and except for the Best Western would probably not have room for your son or else it would be a much more expensive room.

I'm assuming that the Carmel, Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove properties will be even more expensive as these are premium locations.

You should try the B&Bs in Carmel anyway. You never know when you will bet a good deal. Here is a list of B&Bs in Carmel with listed prices.

I would highly recommend a dinner on the pier in Monterey as well. The choice should be The Old Fisherman's Grotto, a long time historical eshtablishment, owned in the past by the legendary Sabu, who had major film roles back in the day, in films such as "The Thief of Bagdad. He was the original Mowgli in the film Jungle Book, and also was in the Elephant Boy. The present owner is Sabu's son, and it is indeed a historical place and it still looks the part.

I love Pacific Grove, right next door to Monterey. Many B&Bs and motels as well as great restaurants. Next to one of my favorite restaurants in all of Monterey Bay, "Lattitudes", see website:( http://www.lattitudesatloverspoint.com/ ),
is an older but clean motel, called Lovers Point Inn, right on Ocean View, near the Lovers Point Park, Ocean front street. Price and location is right. See website: http://www.loverspointinnpg.com/index.html

We stayed at Hotel Abrego in Monterey. It was relatively inexpensive but very nice and clean. Great location in center of Monterey with easy access to downtown and to Hwy 1.

Travel Tips for Monterey

Spanish Architecture

by SteveOSF

Many buildings constructed in the early 1800s still stand in Monterey. They are great examples of Spanish Architecture with their adobe walls, pitched terra cotta roofs, and wooden decks. Downtown Monterey has a "Path of History" with its route marked by round yellow tiles embedded into the sidewalk. The path will take you past many old buildings that were constructed during the time of Mexican rule of California. These historic buildings have a sign posted in front that usually states the name of the building, a brief history, and the year it was built.

The Aquarium is First Rate

by zrim

It would be a crime to bypass the Monterey Aquarium. A world class institution. There are several different habitats including a kelp forest. The jelly fish tanks are out of this world. And who can resist the fun loving otters.

Plants

by grandmaR

I think this tree at the gate of the PG school is the Golden Mimosa Tree, or Cootamundra Wattle. If that is so, the Mimosa or Acadia is an invasive species in some areas. It has a mass of bloom, but is a weak tree. Coming from the East, I found the California flora quite exotic. Particularly the cedar trees, and the ice plant which was used exensively in the medians of highways.

The wild flowers on the hills in the spring after the rains were amazing.

Seagull and Bird Rock

by meteorologist1

This is a photo I took that I'm proud of. It shows Bird Rock in the background and a seagull in the front. The seagull was at the right place at the right time, and I was able to take an artistic picture like this! There are some really amazing views, including Bird Rock, along the 17-mile Drive!

Monterey Peninsula College (MPC)

by Ewingjr98

Located on Fremont Street at the edge of Old Town Monterey is the Monterey Peninsula College. This community college is one of 109 colleges in the California Community College System, and has an enrollment of around 17,000 including students from 46 foreign countries. MPC students receive priority consideration for transfer to the 10 University of California and 23 California State University campuses. Founded in 1947, average tuition at MPC is around $14,000 per year.

MPC has nine sports for men and women including baseball, basketball, track, volleyball, tennis, softball, golf, football, and cross country; they compete in the Coast Conference.

MPC is also home to one of Monterey's weekly farmers' markets.
