Travel Tips for Morro Bay

THE MORRO BAY TRIPLETS

by travelgourmet

Most locals have a love/hate relationship with the power plant smoke stacks, built in the 1950's, that take over the skyline of Morro Bay. The "Gibraltar of the Pacific", Morro Rock, sits in majesty and the stacks look like the "three stooges". They stick out like a sore thumb, but still they have been part of the local history and the first thing you spot that says "Morro Bay" from Hwy 1.

Morro Rock

by Ewingjr98

Morro Rock stands 576 feet tall and marks the entrance to the Morro Bay Harbor. The first European to see Morro Rock was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, and he named it the Morro, or pebble. The rock was originally a natural island, but the northern side was filled in to create the protected Morro Bay Harbor.

Morro Rock is the northern most of the nine major peaks that make up the "Nine Sisters." The other peaks are Black Hill, Cabrillo Peak, Hollister Peak, Cerro Romauldo , Chumash Peak, Bishop Peak, San Luis Mountain, and Islay Hill. These nine major peaks along with numerous smaller peaks and hills were created some 20 million years ago in a unique line of volcanic plugs between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo.

Such lovely creatures

Not only were the conditions, well at least I thought they were, cramped, they were also in need of repair, peeling paint and broken grilles.

You entered the aquarium through the souvenir shop. An entrance fee was payable.

A camp site

by bugalugs

You can walk to the end of the embarcadero in Morro Bay into Tidelands Park, which has a grassy picnic area and playground. Head up the steps from the park and go right on Main Street, taking a scenic walk though Bluff Park into Morro Bay State Park. There is also a camp site at the southern end of the park

SITTING AT THE ROCK OF THE BAY

by travelgourmet

"MORRO BAY"

Your first sight of Morro Bay is on Hwy 1. The imposing mountain of rock seen at the ocean's edge is the famous Morro Rock, located at the northern end of the embarcadero in Morro Bay, the hidden jewel of the south central coast of Hwy 1.

There is something for everyone in Morro Bay. Sand and sea, golfing and sailing. Shopping, dining, walking, bicyling, or just driving around to see the Blue Heron Rookery or the up close view of Morro Rock is worth the side trip on Hwy 1 or even to spend the night in this charming coastal village.
