The Pelican Network
by magicmermaid
To find out about our beautiful town, the things to do and see, I found a good link with great pictures and ideas. It is: www.pelicannetwork.net/morrobay.htm I have been visiting this town once a month for over six years. Now at last I live here full time. When I am away, I miss the fresh air with the scent of the sea, the beautiful sunsets over the ocean and the quiet! I love the birds that visit our yard and the fresh fish found at Giovanni's fish market.
Site of famous tragedy
by Skibbe
While in the area, I took a detour to the place where actor James Dean was killed in a car accident on September 30, 1955. The spot is not marked but there is a monument that a Japanese fan built to him just about 900 feet away next to a restaurant.
The site is in Cholame, 27 miles east of Paso Robles on Hwy. 46.
Visit nearby Cayucos
by trvlrtom
Just a few miles north of Morro Bay on highway 1 is the charming small beach town of Cayucos. A popular US travel magazine voted it the best beach town in California in 2009, so while it is still relatively undiscovered, traffic is likely to pick up. While Morro Bay has undeniably beautiful views and deserves its tourist draw, Cayucos is smaller, less developed and very low key. There isn't a line of restaurants and shops along the waterfront like in Morro Bay, but a mix of small, old time motels, local shops and a few restaurants. The wharf is a good place to go for great views - you can see Morro Rock in the distance - or to watch the surfers just below.
You may just find, like we did, that after staying in Morro Bay, our later trips were all based out of Cayucos.
A seal pup
by bugalugs
One thing that really annoyed me was that one of the seals which had been rehabilitated and which had lived there for a long time they had allowed to mate.
And living there in these conditions was a young seal pup! Obviously this pup who had only ever known that kind of surroundings could not be released into the sea.
A place to take in the sights and smells!

"Morro Bay & Morro Bay Rock"
This 576 foot rocky mound was first sighted by Cabrillo in 1542 and is now a famous landmark for the town of Morro Bay.
Morro Bay has many unique qualities compared to other Californian ocean side communities. It has a natural embayment, and the Army added to that by building breakwaters across the north end of the harbor to have access to the rock. This allowed a wonderful open area for day camping and fishing access to the ocean. Plus, the surfers like to launch into the breakwater end that allows them to swim to the waves. It also gave birdwatchers a unique access to watch many species of birds especially the Peregrine Falcons that live in their natural environment safely.
Although, the power plant does cast a shadowy figure (necessary evil) that is unappealing, the bay and the rock are still lovely to look at and enjoy. This area is also ideal for kayaking because of the breakwaters. So enjoy the shops, restaurants and outdoor activity. Just relax and have a good time.

"Love the ocean!"
We visited here during one of our anniversary trips. We just hit the road and ended up here. We had a wonderful time here.
Post cards rock I think! It brings back memories, especially if you forgot to take any pictures. At least you have a postcard to remind you of your travels.
