Cabins for rent: Private get-away within Mt. Hermon

Again, since I have access to the family cabin, I can't really describe a stay. However, because of the large number of cabin owners in the area, the opportunity to rent a cabin is quite high. Many owners only visit there cabins occasionally, and some may be willing to share to responsible visitors. Many cabins, like our family one, are deliberately less than delux. We have an old eagle claw footed bathtub with shower that provides a sensual thrill in the morning just to get into and when adjusting the water temperature. All the rooms lead to each other, so intimate sleeping arrangements are typical. Wear your woolen clothes and put a log on the fire, as this area can get cool at night. The elevation Mt. Hermon is about 1000 ft., and the foggy drizzle the comes in from the coast can put a child on the bones. Snow though is relatively rare.

What's great about renting a cabin here, particularly in the summer months, is the dramatic transition from the beach action. We often spend our days down in Santa Cruz, or perhaps touring a winery in the area, but in the mornings and evenings, it's very nice to be able to leave the beach noise behind and seek shelter in the quiet of the redwoods. The cabins are all unique, but many hang over cliffs and have great views of the redwood forest. To find a cabin, browse the bulletin boards in Felton, or browse the web. Word of mouth is the best way to find the cabin of your dream though. Despite my recommendation, our cabin is not available for rent.

Mt. Hermon Conference Center: Christian Spiritual Retreat Center

Since my family has had a cabin near the center for over 75 years, the need to board up at the retreat center has never been a need. However, the center has excellent accommodations for families participating in the retreat activities. Youth in particular will like an opportunity to visit here. The brand of Christianity here is not the new money, in your face kind of pentacostalism, but rather the more relaxed traditional Protestantism familiar to most Americans. So, even the non-religious could tolerate a day or so here, and the many of the spiritual and recreational activites can be enjoyed by anyone. The facilities are generally excellent, long dependent more on deep pocket church benefactors than Sunday morning offering plate. Stay here is generally booked well in advance, often in a package deal, as churches organize to send their youth and adults here for sometimes weeks at a time. Registration is in a building next to the Post Office in Mt. Hermon.

The Conference center accommodations are located in a large number of buildings scattered like a college campus around a center for dining, church services, post office, gift shop, etc. Many of the buildings are new and hang precariously directly over the creeks and canyon of Mr. Hermon. A number of trails lead away from the conference center to meditation spots along Bean Creek. Unfortunately, for some of us long time residents, the meadow like park in which we played as children has now been filled by a huge indoor recreational building and parking lot.
