 We did not actually stay here but we stepped inside for a little look round and admired some of the lovely old decor and furnishings, particularly the wood work. So this could also qualify as a tip for an historical building.

It was first hotel of its kind to be built in Murphys at a time when tourists were beginning to come to Calveras county following the discovery and opening up of the forest of giant trees a few miles away north of Arnold.
The Hotel was damaged by the devastating fire of 1859 but repaired and continued to host many famous visitors - Statesmen, Generals and Writers.
Now enlarged by an adjacent extension in modern hotel style the dozen or so rooms in the old building look smaller but comfortable and have modern amenities,. For around 90dollars you could sleep in the Mark Twain room. As a British visitor the room prices seemed very reasonable to me.
The website gives a good "tour" of the rooms in both parts of the hotel and of the publblic area like bar and restaurant..
I think the exterior of the hotel could be smartened up considerably by the removal of some of the drapes and advertising material which I though gave it a very scruffy look - unbefitting a National Historic Monument.
