    Nevada City's National Hotel

    by

A registered historic landmark, the National Hotel at the foot of Broad Street the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Rocky Mountains. The first time I visited this hotel I fell in love with it. Beautifully preserved architecture and gloriously furnished with period antiques and upholstery in damask, velvet and silk gave you the true feeling of stepping back to Victorian times. I walked up the staircase to see the rooms, all furnished in period, in varying sizes and priced accordingly. Paintings graced the hallway and you could go out on the balcony for a bird's eye view of festivities on Broad Street below (such as the Victorian Christmas Fair in December or the Nevada City Bike Run in the summer).

Unfortunately times have changed. The carpets are thin and the furniture shows a lot of wear. Some of the wonderful wooden pieces have been replaced by cheap white wicker. The balcony is closed off because of it's disrepair it is no longer safe to venture out there. The disrepair of this piece of history is so sad. It is not what it was 30 or 40 years ago but it is still history. Nevada City sits on Rough and Ready Creek. It is an old pioneer gold mining town. To get a feel of the time from which this hotel and town sprung take a look here! It's not a 5 star hotel; the beds are a little lumpy and the bathrooms are cramped but serviceable and clean. This is the same hotel that gentlemen in high top hats and tails and women in bustled gowns adorned. It has history and character from the Gold Rush days. If you're expecting the conveniences and space of hotels of today then this hotel is not for you.

    King Suite $140.00

Directions: Broad Street exit off California Highway 49, first building on the right.

BUILT IN 1856 AND STILL IN USE

    by

The getaway is to Nevada City, so stay right in town at the National Hotel which has been open since 1856. It is the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Rocky Mountains. Enjoy the suites with antiques from the gold rush days. The Victorian style hotel sits right on Broad Street in the center of town. Park the car once, and make sure your boots were made for walking.

Unique Quality: You are in for a shock if you swim in the pool. You could drink the water. What? The swimming pool is filled with fresh cool mountain water. Now that's the way for a fresh swim.

Directions: Look for the large green building in the center of town.

    Prices range from $68.00-$119.00

Unique Quality: This hotel has a top location. It is right on the main street of downtown Nevada City. If you want to experience the feeling of the goldrush-days, visit the hotel's saloon at night. There is live-music every once in a while, and you can dance your shoes off....
