Best Newport beach or Huntington Beach hotel

by leya

We're a group of moms and family looking for a few days close to the beach, shops and restaurants. Looking to spend about $100 a night (plus or minus 50$). Preferably with a pool for the little ones.

Any suggestions from the locals?

Thanks,
Leya

RE: Best Newport beach or Huntington Beach hotel

For that price, you might want to try the Ayres Hotel on Bristol St. in Costa Mesa. It's a nice medium-size family-run hotel, it includes breakfast and they have a decent pool (just be sure to ask for a room facing away from the airport flight path). It's located close to John Wayne airport and about a 10 minute drive on the freeway from the beach but also about 3 minutes from the South Coast Plaza area which has lots of shopping, etc. Other alternatives, but they won't be quite as nice are along Newport Blvd - your best bets are to try tripadvisor.com or enter "Costa Mesa" into google and you'll get a list of links to hotels. Or, if you're looking to spend a little more, the Hyatt Newporter is a very nice hotel with beautiful grounds & pool and within reasonable walking distance of the beach and great shopping & restaurants.
Have fun!

Travel Tips for Newport Beach

Know that this is a Republican town

by marinarena

In this city of a very blue state, one sees mostly red. N.B. is a very Republican area. Democrats are outnumbered here about 2 to 1. Expect lavish political bashes here for the elephant party in swank hotels and other spots especially when Election Day comes around.

Blind by Bay Lights at Boat Parade (pre-Christmas)

by marinarena

The annual Christmas Boat Parade is a crowd pleaser for locals and many visitors. Fancy yachts , boats and kayaks dazzle marvelously while going on a 2 hour cruise, starting around 6:30. Capturing the best views is fun or frustrating. The best bet for reserve seating is to contact local groups like the American Legion Post and people at the Newport Sea Base. Reserve as early as possible!! Check website for beautiful pics of the parade.

City of My Youth

"The Real OC"

I spent much of my young adulthood on the beaches and streets of Newport Beach. The Newport that I know isn;t represented by popular (and lame) TV shows like THE OC and REAL HOUSEWIVES OF THE OC. Most people who live here or were raised here will tell you the same thing.

There are pretentious people and neighborhoods but the typical tourist won't run into those too often.

Riches of Newport ... and Corona Del Mar

"Real Newport"

Newport Beach had been a lesser known part of California- until the sizzing hot soap opera, The O.C. debut throughout the world. Now, people think that they are familiar with NB- or, rather the entire Orange county. However, one must take note that the show is actually filmed 40 miles away in Hermosa Beach in Los Angeles county! TV is not reality thank God!

Well, here I will add some insider info and more pictures of the real NB. This group of pages deserves much more attention but for now , I give an overall synopsis and a brief list of where to go and what to do on a trip in THINGS TO DO! Though my set of LB doesn't reflect this, there are numerous great dining spots here- too many that I have to do still!!

This has been home to NBA superstars, Dennis Rodman and Kobe Bryant, who is still here. Rodman certainly left his mark here by having crazy -scandalous parties at his beach home which were well-reported locally on the news.

"The "Capital" City of O.C."

When speaking of capital as money, NB is clearly the capital city of O.C!
Generally, if you live want to live here comfortably, you have to be super rich, rich, or very upper middle class!! At least if you are not loaded with cash, you can still enjoy the scene here!

"Newport Balboa Coast"

Oh, so lovely!!

Pics and more info to come on Corona Del mar, a community nestled within Newport Beach.

Escape to Newport

by soulanjuli

Right smack in the middle of final exams, end of the semester research projects, and the chaos of moving out of the dorms, came my much needed break from mundane reality---sorority formal. This year the lovely event took place aboard a gorgeous yacht. We set sail at sunset and toured the beautiful Newport Beach Marina. The view offered a pink, blue and orange sunset, homes that ranged from tiny cottages to enormous waterfront mansions, and the tall, distinctive office buildings of the nearby city. Restaurants along the marina included Joe's Crab Shack, Remy Bar, and a few others. Because of its location, which is close to major cities like Irvine and L.A., Newport Beach makes a quick, relaxing, easy weekend getaway.
