HWY 49. Gold Rush Towns

Visiting Yosemite National Park for a few days and wondering which Gold Rush Towns on Hwy 49 are a must visit. My wife and I will be staying in Oakhurst. Thanks for any help.

Oakhurst is on the southern end of the 49, which were the low grade ore was mined. Unfortunately, the section of Hwy 49 between Mariposa and Jamestown is a long and windy road through treeless mountain areas. The best part of Hwy 49 for the drive begins at Sonora and ends at Placerville. Sonora is the best along this stretch in my opinion, but Nevada City is the best of all the Mother Lode towns and are tastefully restored for tourism. There are many smaller towns that are very pleasant though, that are well worth a visit. Some of these are yet to be restored. Angels Camp, Placerville, and Auburn have good features, but have been spoiled by new development. Mariposa is pleasant enough and is the only 49er town on the way from Oakhurst to Yosemite. Thanks for the advice. Will check out Jackson, and will be going to Reno, so Auburn and Nevada City are on the list. Taking the Sugar Pine train, BBQ Special, near the Hwy 41 entrance to Yosemite.

BASS LAKE

Near Oakhurst, before Yosemite, sits a body of water called Bass Lake. Don't miss this beautiful recreation spot while exploring Yosemite or the gold country towns. It is a great chill out location to rest up, fish, camp, swim, water ski, or eat.

There is a narrated one hour pleasure cruise aboard the Bass Lake Queen II that sails daily during the summer at 3pm. It departs from the Marina in front of Ducey's on the Lake (Pines Village) where food and music await on Friday's during the summer. Yosemite Bass Lake Fishing Adventures located at Ducey's Dock has three hour excursions with everything you will need to try and catch the big one. Their phone number is (559) 642-3200.

Southern Gateway to Yosemite

Oakhurst is located along hwy 41 about 30 miles from Yosemite. It is the closest town to the park which has all the services that are lacking in the park and its immediate vicinity. Like Mariposa, Oakhurst is a great place to stop and spend the night if you're planning to visit Yosemite.
