Things to see and do
by GenuinelyCurious
Oakland's jewel is Lake Merritt. Without it, this would be just another 'burb of San Francisco.
There's bird-watching, people-watching and general strolling in a great environment.
There are more people to hang out with on Piedmont Avenue, Rockridge (College Ave) and Jack London Square.
There's more natural beauty in East Bay Regional Park and, surprisingly intriguing: Mountain View Cemetery where SF's elite from the last century have been laid to rest.

Take 29 up into Napa and do some wine tasting
by davequ
Not really off the beaten path, but I really enjoyed a day of driving north from Oakland up through Napa Valley and on towards Mendocino.
I always take I80 North to Hwy 29 at Vallejo, then north on 29 through Napa and Rutherford, then west on 175 over to Fetzer Vineyard. 101 then gets you back down through Petaluma, Golden Gate and over the bay bridge to Oakland again.
It is a beautiful drive.
Locals will laugh as they know better places, but as a tourist I always stop at Niebaum-Coppola (used to be Inglenook) in Rutherford, then at Fetzer in Hopland and buy some Reserve.
Best pub in the East Bay
by cvilla007 about The Englander
The Englander is a fantastic British pub in the East Bay. They have over 86 beers on tap, from old favorites to microbrews. The taps literally run from one end of the bar to the other.
They have limited bar seating but plenty of tables indoors, & limited patio seating.
Most importantly, they have many televisions so you're sure to see any game. For NFL fans, they have the Sunday ticket, so they show all the NFL games. :-)
Furthermore, this place is much nicer than a typical sports pub. The Englander rocks! The food's not bad either. I've had the fish & chips & the hamburgers - all were good.
