To really enjoy this city you should be able to appreciate its character for the city is neither pretty nor particularily special. However there you can find great bookstores that are not as popular as the ones in neighboring Berkeley and jazz clubs better than in San Francisco. Browsing in the 24-hour bookstore where I foound the greates, antique books. Talking with the barista over the busy esspresso counter in the convention district.
East Bay Sports fans deserve better
by davequ
Raider Nation ain't what it used to be, but hope springs eternal with yet another new coach (this one likes to punch out the staff)
DOINK!!!!---------------------------> Just my opinion, but if I was a stubborn diehard shamelessly-loyal Raider fan,
(not to mention crazy enough to pony up thousands of $s to sit in that ridiculous stadium for 8 weeks a year plus exhibition)
... I would request the current Raider front office be put politely but firmly out to pasture. The once-proud Raider franchise is now a shell of it's former self.
East Bay sports fans deserve better product than this.

Great food worth driving to Berkeley for
by davequ
If you're going to be in East Bay and you like good cuisine, head for Berkeley.
Chez Panisse is the world reknowned Alice Waters restaurant in Berkeley.
Expensive but worth it. Make SURE you have a reservation, even for the Café.
A typical menu entry below (try not to drool..):
Wednesday, March 9 $65
Roasted line-caught striped bass with black olives and fennel oil
Potato cream soup with California caviar and fried leeks
Grilled duck breast with kumquat and tangelo sauce; white and green asparagus
ragoût with wild mushrooms and green garlic
Bittersweet, white, and milk chocolate ice creams with orange-almond tuiles
All the ingredients are the freshest, cleanest produce and protein available in Northern California. Alice Waters is in my opinion the Mother Theresa of good cuisine.
1517 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley, California 94709 right smack in the middle of Berkeley, but a little "off the path" for Oakland.
More than a restarant, it is an experience.
And don't forget to buy (and if you are lucky, have Alice sign) one of the excellent David Lance Goines posters.
Yoshi's: The place for jazz
by Tom_Fields about Yoshi's
Yoshi's has the best live music of any club in the Bay Area (which is saying a LOT). Engagements normally run several nights for each band. Built as a jazz club, it has enough sound-proofing that you cannot hear the passing trains. Smart casual.
Killer BBQ in a great location
by Cruiseone2003 about Everett and Jones BBQ
Everett and Jones, located in Jack London Square is one of my favorite places for BBQ. The location is just a block from the water, safe area, the ambiance is open and friendly, the staff are helpful and attentive, they will offer suggestions if you are unsure about what you want to order. What makes E and J's is their BBQ sauce, they make Mild, medium and Hot. In my opinion, the fact that they have a hot BBQ sauce is what does it for me, you can even order it by the case (I do) and give it to your friends and family; make converts out of all of them!! I've had pretty much all their entree's but my favorite hands down is the brisket. It's slow cooked, has a nice crunchy outside full of flavor but under that crust is the most tender beef you will ever taste. Smother it with E and J's BBQ sauce and you have a plate full of heaven!
You get a choice of two sides, I usually get the potato salad and sweet potatoes.
