With the exception of the glory years of the early 1970's, the A's have always been the Bay Area's second choice to the beloved Giants - despite the fact that they have consistently been the better team.
Games here hardly ever sell out and on many nights the park is less than half full. It's the same game, though, and there are lots of die-hard A's fans hailing mostly from the East Bay.
The A's are a small market club in a big market town. They certainly deserve a lot more fans than they get. Crowds get a bit bigger when they're playing major market teams like the Yankees or Red Sox, or when they're playing the hated Angels.
Going to games is easy (BART goes right to the Coliseum), and, depending on the night you go, amazingly cheap - on Wednesday nights upper deck seats are only $2! I wouldn't bother getting tickets in advance (unless it's for one of the exceptions listed above, or if you've got to have the best seats available).
Compared to the hoidy-toidy Giants and their new ballpark and gazillion dollar payroll, the A's are a more down to earth, normal Joe kinda team.
Oh, one warning though... if you drive, park in the lots - do NOT park on the streets surrounding the stadium! Like most big city ballparks, the Coliseum is in a very bad neighborhood, and it's very possible you could have your car broken into or have your battery stolen. I know this because it happened to me!!! ***UPDATE FOR 2006 SEASON! The A's, in an attempt to boost lagging sales and to attract a better class of crowd, have taken the unusual step of closing the entire upper deck! This effectively reduces the capacity of the stadium to around 43,000. So I'm guessing that the previously mentioned cheap nights are gone. In addition, this would also make tickets less readily available for big series (meaning Yanks, Red Sox, and Angels). So I would say that tickets are probably less available than they used to be, but if they're not playing one of the big 3, you should be able to get tickets at the gate.
Altamont Pass Wind Farm is one of America's oldest wind farms and is known as having the largest concentration of windmills in the world. Its 6,000 small 1970s-era turbines are old and outdated, but are slowly being upgraded with the larger, taller turbines that are safer for birds and more efficient energy producers.
The entire farm produces about 125 MW of energy, which averages out to a puny 20 kW per turbine... today's modern turbines produce from 700 kW to 5 MW each. For comparison, the hydroelectric plant at nearby San Luis Reservoir in central California produces 424 MW, and the Diablo Canyon power plant in in San Luis Obispo County has two units that can produce 1,100 MW each!
The Altamont Pass Wind Farm is located about 40 miles east of Oakland along Interstate-580.
By far the tallest peak in the East Bay area, Mt Diablo towers over everything around it. It was used as a reference point by explorers. This state park has numerous hiking trails offering great views. Unfortunately, I was there on a rather hazy day, so the view was not what I'd hoped.
We wound up here today because this place is open late. Sign said, open till 2AM Fridays and Saturdays. Well, I sort of have to disagree with some of the negative reviews I've seen, because my experience was OK and sort of met my expectations. Going in, it seemed like a "fast food place" or part of a chain. But in fact there are two locations for this business, one in Emeryville, and one in Capitola. The decor is "beachy" like with fish nets hanging around, surfboards on display and bird stuff etc.
The menu has breakfast items (available all day) and seafoods, prime rib, ribs, chicken, burgers. We ordered the seafood platter special and a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs and the hotfudge sunday. The service in our case was wonderful and I saw other patrons getting good service which was appreciated. The food is somewhat ... I guess I'll say medium in quality. But not bad I observed someone eating the Shrimp Salad and that looked good. I wouldn't say I've tried enough dishes to really make a good judgment
