Travel Tips for Oakland

Port of Oakland

by davequ

I like to watch all the late-night activity by the port / loading docks down the long waterfront from Jack London Square all the way to Berkeley.

The waterfront can be very pretty & peaceful, yet still busy at night. Walking the Jack London boardwalk and sitting up late one night in the Waterfront Plaza watching them load a huge cargo freighter.

Sounds boring, (maybe it IS) but it was intriguing watching how the huge rail cartons are trucked;
then the whole truck lifted up into the belly of the ship by gigantic cranes like the ones in the pic;
where the truck drives to the location inside the ship to unload the carton;
finally the empty truck is lifted & unloaded by the crane back down to the dock so it can drive off for another carton.

This was repeated over and over all night until a mind-boggling (tons & tons) number of cartons had been placed onboard for a voyage to somewhere in Asia / Pacific.

It was interesting to watch, and the impression it gave me of the scope and size of international trade really put things into perspective & made me feel rather small.

Step out and about

by GenuinelyCurious

The Rockridge neighborhood in northern Oakland has become - amazingly - chock full of million dollar homes and some fine foodie options.

Every year, they have this thing. It's like an overgrown block party or a mini City fair. Good opportunity for people watching, but bring a sweater for when the fog rolls in.

Playin' the Ponies at Golden Gate Fields

by Karnubawax

You can't miss Golden Gate Fields; the huge grandstands loom over Highway 80 near the Albany/Berkeley border. A large lighted highway sign tells you what's going on and when.

GGF's season runs in late spring, takes the summer off, and then resumes in the fall. Admission is next to nothing - something like $3, though parking close to the track is something like $6. There is free parking available, but it's a little bit of a hike.

The clientele here tend to be on the seedier side, more content to stay inside watching the screens than in the stands actually watching the races. Weekends are different; crowds are much larger and contain more families. They have great promotional days - check the website or call.

As an alternative, you may rather go to Bay Meadows - actually you won't have a choice; they never run concurrent schedules. ***UPDATE*** Both GGF and Bay Meadows have recently been the subject of lots of rumors. The value of the land - once wasteland but now surrounded by 'burbs - has increased so much that its very possible that one or both of these famous tracks will soon be sold and developed. Just what we need... more suburbs.

Oakland's Chinatown is a nice...

by cvilla007

Oakland's Chinatown is a nice place to visit, and though quite visible in Oakland, it is 'off the beaten path' for any San Francisco vacation. It is much smaller than the Chinatown across the bay (in San Fran), but it is also easier to maneuver and less crowded. Chinatown makes up a large portion of downtown Oakland. The street signs are in English & Chinese, there are fruit and vegetable markets on the streets, and Chinese shops and restaurants are all over. The popular Chinese-American novelist, Amy Tan, hails from Chinatown Oakland.

* Check out the mall on Franklin between 9th & 11th Streets for trinkets & stuff. There's also an Asian branch of the Oakland Public Library there offering many books & newspapers in Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese & more.

* Each Friday a Farmer's Market sets up off Broadway near 9th Street. The place gets really crowded - lots of Flowers, stuff to eat, and gifts to buy.

What a way to pass a day

by cjg1 about LJ Quinn's

I have eaten here twice now. Such a wonderful place to pass a day sitting outside watching life go by with a beer and some food.

There is a deck out back sitting over the marina that is usually covered in peanut shells. I hear they sweep it once a week. I usually have the chicken sandwich. Quite good and when washed down with a large PBR on a sunny day it really doesnt get much better for daytime food.
