Travel Tips for Oakland

The most notable place to...

by melemeday

The most notable place to visit in Oakland is Jack London Square, right near the water with a little boardwalk, and some really good affordable restaurants, such as the Spaghetti Factory and TGIF's.

Raiders vs KC

by malianrob

No offense but KC is not one of my favorite teams. I was even more upset when they won. Layer up, it might be warm in the afternoon, definately warmer than San Francisco ,but it gets chilly at night. So bring sun screen and a blanket!

Golden State Warriors

by Karnubawax

Okay... I don't give a rat's behind about the NBA, and growing up with the Warriors obviously had something to do with that.

The Warriors, over the past 15 years or so, have been one of the worst franchises in professional sports - if not THE worst. For some unknown, unfathomable reason, people still go to actually see them - usually to root for the team they are playing against. Thankfully... AMAZINGLY... the Warriors are actually improving (finally) and look like they may make the playoffs this year - in a sport where you really have to stink to not make the playoffs!

You'd think the tickets would be really cheap. Guess again. I don't know what they're going for these days (nor care), but it used to be like $42 for lower deck seats! Tickets are usually plentiful, unless they're playing a hot, popular team, or the team that the latest NBA "superstar" is on, or the Lakers (whether they're hot or not).

USS Hornet

by Tom_Fields

The aircaft carrier USS Hornet had a distinguished record during World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam War. She also picked up the returning Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts in 1969. During World War II, her planes downed 1410 Japanese aircraft (more than any other carrier except the Essex), participated in numerous Pacific island-hopping campaigns, and attacked the battleship Yamato off Okinawa.

However, this is NOT the carrier that Jimmy Doolittle used to launch his famous raid on Tokyo in 1942; that ship was sunk off Guadalcanal. In fact, this one is named after that earlier vessel.

The guides give you a good look at Navy life during that period. However, the old warship's condition needs improvement, due to lack of money. She's at the old Navy base on Almeda Island, across from Oakland.

Great Authentic Mexican Food

by SJTravel about El Huarache Azteca

The food here is delicious. I have never been to Mexico, but my friend who ate with me lived in Mexico City for a little bit of time. He loved the food here and said it was one of the closest finds to Mexico he has ever been to. It is not in the greatest of places in Oakland, but it was not completely unsafe. We parked pretty far (because parking can be difficult) and walked a good number of blocks and we were fine. But still be aware while you are there. The food is great and definitely worth the trip out there. The waiters and waitresses speak Spanish, they can speak English but will start with Spanish. The writing on the menus and on the walls are all in Spanish and English. It is great. I had a huarache, one of the signature dishes of the restaurant. It was great. Very tasty. My friend had a combo plate and tortilla soup. The soup was not on the menu, but definitely worth the order. The best things that we had were the drinks. They had authentic Horchata and Jamaica. The Jamaica was especially great.
