Nice Hotel on Jack London Square

This hotel is a nice, simple hotel...fairly standard issue, but pretty nice. It's right on Jack London square on the waterfront and pedestrian area in Oakland. There are shops, restaurants and a kind of 'festival' area type of feel here typical of urban renewal that seems to work ok - though isn't exactly a huge smashing success. Still the night I stayed there, there was a decent amount of foot traffic, a few restaurants around and in the morning, there was a decent farmers's market (though not as good as the Lake Merrit area one.

Unique Quality: Miss Pearl's jam house is attached to the hotel, so that's nice and there are some nice ocean view room. (I didn't get one) Also nice is the fact that you can stroll to restaurants and cafes.

One great tip is that the ferry stop is right in front of the hotel, so it would be very easy to fly into oakland, stay here and then spend the day in SF without the need of a car.

All in all, this hotel is nice because of the waterfront and pedestrian setting and is relatively quiet for an urban place. (the seagulls sure do squawk though)

My Favorite

One of my favorite hotels anywhere. It sometimes reminds me of the Edgewater in Seattle.

Not modern or pretentious.... maybe even a little eccentric for some people. I think Waterfront Plaza has more character than most hotels in the US. Really enjoyable walks along the boardwalk waterfront with pleasantly addictive views of the Bay and San Francisco are right outside the front door.
I always look forward to staying here.

Unique Quality: A few of the rooms have real personality with good views. Some recommendations:

201 and 301 have gas fireplaces and a view of Port of Oakland & San Francisco. The top floor "500s" / the penthouse have fireplaces, open roof terraces with lots of sun and good bay area views.

All the furniture / etc. has unique character, the windows open for a good bay breeze, and most rooms have some type of terrace overlooking the "channel" and the bay.

Costs a bit, but there is imho no better hotel in Oakland.

At times the wakeup room service has been a little funky. Make sure to leave enough time to eat downstairs if they misplace your order.

note: Just my opinion and the hotel will not like me saying this, but for what you are paying,
if you can't get a guaranteed waterside room, you probably shouldn't bother staying here.

Some of the waterside rooms are worth fighting for so I recommend you pay up a little and insist on one whenever possible.

Oakland Hotels

On Oakland's harbor in the historical Jack London Square, the Waterfront Plaza is a deluxe hotel with dramatic views of San Francisco, easy access to Oakland's premiere jazz house, Yoshi's, as well as a heated pool and sauna. Take a ferry ride on the bay, relax in a balconied room with a fireplace, and enjoy a central Bay Area location.
