Not modern or pretentious.... maybe even a little eccentric for some people. I think Waterfront Plaza has more character than most hotels in the US. Really enjoyable walks along the boardwalk waterfront with pleasantly addictive views of the Bay and San Francisco are right outside the front door.
I always look forward to staying here.
A few of the rooms have real personality with good views. Some recommendations:
201 and 301 have gas fireplaces and a view of Port of Oakland & San Francisco. The top floor "500s" / the penthouse have fireplaces, open roof terraces with lots of sun and good bay area views.
All the furniture / etc. has unique character, the windows open for a good bay breeze, and most rooms have some type of terrace overlooking the "channel" and the bay.
Costs a bit, but there is imho no better hotel in Oakland.
At times the wakeup room service has been a little funky. Make sure to leave enough time to eat downstairs if they misplace your order.
note: Just my opinion and the hotel will not like me saying this, but for what you are paying,
if you can't get a guaranteed waterside room, you probably shouldn't bother staying here.
Some of the waterside rooms are worth fighting for so I recommend you pay up a little and insist on one whenever possible.
