If you are coming to Oxnard for more than one or two days, I'd definately recommend Embassy Suites at Mandalay Beach. Bringing all the comforts of home to these gorgeous suites, the service is fantastic- as is the location. While a tad more expensive than most other local accomodations, the suites are well worth it if you plan on a long term visit or temporary job transfer, and they are right next to the Oxnard Park for sunsets and afternoon walks. Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to get a suite facing the Pacific for dinner at sunset!
Unique Quality: Location, location, location, and 2 floor condo style living.
We stayed overnight just for the heck of it. The hotel is within walking distance from our house so we laughed the whole way while we wheeled our overnighters down the street.
The edifice of the hotel seemed imposing as we walked up the driveway sans vehicle. The valet looked slightly perplexed that we had no car until we told him we lived down the street and we walked. We left him scratching his head in wonderment and went to check in.
In the beautiful lobby, we saw a newly married couple posing for their wedding pictures.
After we settled in our suite we decided to go home and feed the birds. We had a pizza delivered to the house, walked back up the street and ate it on our hotel room patio.
Unique Quality: The room was terrific, we had a partial oceanview which was great because it differed from the one at home.
The bathrooms were big and the suite spacious. Despite the coolness of the weather we sat outside drinking coffee on our patio.
We took a walk along the pathway on the hotel beachfront. People were biking, rollerblading, and flying kites. We had a good laugh because this was our neighborhood and we were behaving like tourists.
A fully cooked-to-order breakfast was included in the nightly fare.
This hotel is a bit expensive, but seriously, I haven't heard a bad thing about it. my friends parents stay here whenever they come up to visit and have not been dissappointed yet. (they visit a lot)
beautiful grounds, right on the beach, you can rent paddle bikes etc. to ride alond the paved beach path... great breakfast buffet. and on and on and on.
There is a restaurant inside this hotel that is definately worth mentioning. its Called Capristrano's and it is Outstanding. the staff is always very friendly, the ambiance is great and the food is wonderful.
Unique Quality: beach, bike rentals, pool, meandering trails, waterfalls, bar, live music (some nights).... compared to the hotels around it, this one is definately the overachiever of them.

Oxnard Beach is located off of Harbor. Open from Dawn till Dusk, park here and enjoy a picnic or a stroll down the beach- I would drive through each day and try to capture the sunset before dinner. Amenities featured at this Oxnard beach include barbeque areas, volleyball courts, a covered picnic area and a path for inline skating and jogging. Parking is offered in a pay lot.
My wife and I stayed 5 nights at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort in mid-October 2005. Although it had rained the day before our arrival and the weather was not perfect during our stay, the grounds were beautiful, the facilities were first-rate and the service from the hotel staff was outstanding. We will return!
We spent three nights at the end of July at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach. The grounds, pools and rooms were immaculate and beautifully decorated. We had two rooms, a "full ocean view" in building 6 for my disabled mother-in-law, and a "partial ocean view" for my husband, kids, and me. My mother-in-law was really pleased, as the 3rd floor room had patio area facing directly onto the ocean. The Embassy suites reservation agent actually called the property before I booked to make sure it would have this, as my mom-in-law couldn't leave her room much but wanted the ocean experience.
Our room, in building 2, was set back a bit more, but our view was spectacular as well! We had a very private balcony on the end, facing the south end of the beach. It was super! Our bellman patiently went to both rooms (quite a walk) and got us settled in. All of the help was friendly and helpful.
My kids LOVED the pool areas- one spa is as big as a small home swimming pool! The place was swamped with kids, and many befriended mine and they had tons of fun. My only complaint here is that there are NOT ENOUGH CHAISE LOUNGES for a hotel of that size. I had to stake out our two chairs at 10:30 am to make sure we had some. They were all gone soon after, and people were constantly hunting for seats. With some rearranging, more deck chairs could be added, and more guests would be satisfied. For $300+ dollars a night (summer rates w/view) you'd expect something as simple as that.
The free breakfast daily was super, although you need to get there by 8:30 to avoid the rush. Once again, fewer tables were there than needed, and the tables were tiny, causing some families to push two tables together. The evening happy hour was also nice, with lots of snacks and drinks, and a pool table and foosball dominated by little kids. As I said, it's a great family getaway (at least in the summer) and it really isn't for quiet, romantic times.
I would definitely take my family there again!
My husband and I have stayed in dozens and dozens of hotels from Best Westerns to the Bellagio and everything in between, but have never had the negative experience that we had at the Mandalay Beach Resort. I called a week before Father's Day and personally spoke with the manager, Dennis, and explained that I wanted to make Father's Day extra special for my husband, price was not an issue. I wanted the best. The manager booked me in a prime ocean front room, best building -3, and best view -third floor.
Check-in is late at 4 and we arrived at 3:30. When we were told our room wasn't ready, we waited. At 4 our room wasn't ready and we were told 15 minutes; then several times we were told it would be 10 more minutes with the lame excuse that the previous guest had checked out late, which is a management problem, not ours. We were offered a room in a different building and we declined. We wanted the pre-arranged room. After 5 o’clock we decided to leave and drive home. The On-duty manager, Danny, had a few perfunctory insincere apologies when we asked to speak to him. While sitting for an hour and a half in the lobby I saw many, many guests being told that their rooms weren’t ready and they could take another room or wait.
This seems to be the way the Mandalay Beach Resort does business. We are Hilton Honors members and have always had the finest attention whenever we have stayed at Embassy Suites. I read the negative reviews and should have believed them. Embassy Suites ruined my special Father’s Day for my wonderful husband and left a very bad feeling about ES for both of us. Don’t stay here, unless you’re willing to settle for very poor service.
we enjoyed the stay at this lively hotel. location is great. beach beautiful. service was not superb but the new general manager is very responsive to input and is evidently bringing his entire staff up to speed. it is a great family spot with plenty to do and nicely maintained. it should be remembered that this is NOT a ritz carlton and individuals who have expectations of a super upscale hotel will be disappointed. our teenaged boys and 21 year old made use of all the facilities and certainly made the most of buffet breakfast and happy hour. we would go back again to this very relaxed and casual resort.
This was our second stay at the Mandalay Bay Resort. We liked staying there a year ago, although the place was quite busy, especially pool area. We initially chose the place because of its location, right on the beach. We liked the landscape and a great breakfast. But, this year's stay was a disappointment from the very start. When we entered our suite, the smell of a cigarrette smoke was overwhelming. We were told that the room as the whole building was a nonsmoking wing of the resort. An air refreshing machine was brought into the room, which we run for 24 hours, even though we were assured that after one hour of use we should "have the room completely refreshed". The smell stayed with us for the two days we spent there. And, unfortunately, noone bothered to follow up with us to see if the problem had been resolved to our satisfaction. Then, as this was not enough, during the second night we were up till one o'clock in the morning due to loud music coming from either the restaurant or one of the ballrooms. The manager on duty that night explained to me that the information on the music was posted in the lobby. You would expect more from Embassy Suites. Definately better service. Maybe they should consider giving out ear plugs with the key as they welcome you at the Resort. Not a place for a restful weekend.

The City of Oxnard is home to over 20 miles (32 km) of scenic, relatively uncrowded coastline. The beaches in Oxnard are large and the sand is exceptionally soft. Great beaches, but I think for a family you might have a better time in Carpinteria. Day camping as well as overnight campgrounds. Children seem to love the smooth beach and fine sand.
If you can avoid the weekend, the Embassy Suites Mandalay Bay in Oxnard is a wonderful family-affordable resort to stay at--you won't get this close to ocean view rooms without paying a fortune...we just try to do a Sunday through Thursday, stay, for example. The beach there is great! Oxnard is a good affordable place to stay within a relatively short drive to SB. Also, the outlet stores nearby in Camarillo are a great place to shop with a family.
Leo Carrillo State Park, which is south of Oxnard is one of my all time favorite beaches. Not only is it in a beautiful location, but it is so varied. There are one and a half miles of beach, including a large open stretch and smaller coves. If you are there when the tide is out, there is an outstanding area of tide pools. There are also some interesting rock formations and some coastal caves in the area.

beach, bike rentals, pool, meandering trails, waterfalls, bar, live music (some nights).... compared to the hotels around it, this one is definately the overachiever of them.
