Very nice, relaxing atmosphere

Several families stayed there (2 nights) for a wedding in the chapel. All within walking distance to chapel, dining area, and water. Rustic, clean, pleasant setting. Large area with fireplace, piano, pool tables, store close to rooms. Absolutely wonderful breakfast included! Dinner was very good also but an extra fee. Chapel was charming. All staff very nice. Enjoyed every minute of stay. No T.V.

Asilomar Conference Grounds

The Asilomar Conference Grounds at Asilomar State Beach is owned by California State Parks. Built in 1913 by California architect Julia Morgan (who also built the Hearst Mansion), the site was originally a YWCA. Since 1956 California has owned the site, and has a private contractor called Delaware North to operate the conference centers, restaurant and lodging. The conference grounds have several facilities of varying sizes for meetings, plus 314 rooms, many with great views of the Pacific Ocean. Oddly enough the rooms do not have TVs or phones. In the off season, mid-week rates are as low as $109 a night while peak rates can be closer to $200... not bad considering you are just 1/2 mile from the exclusive Spanish Bay Resort which shares the smae view for several hundred dollars a night more (and it's easy walking distance, so you can enjoy their bars, restaurants, and bagpiper)!

While the rooms and the food might leave a lot to be desired, the location is peaceful and beautiful, next to the beaches, wildlife, and with stunning views of the sunset over the Pacific!

Walk from Asilomar into Pebble Beach

by Ewingjr98

I finally got around to jogging in Pebble Beach. I parked at Asilomar Beach along Sunset Drive between the surfer beach and Fishwife restaurant. The trail cuts though some evergreen trees, then immediately becomes a narrow, but sturdy boardwalk on the dunes between the beach and the Links at Spanish Bay golf course. For about a mile you can continue on this boardwalk enjoying great views of the Pacific Ocean until it ends at a big parking area and picnic spot at Moss Beach along Spanish Bay. The trail continues as packed dirt along the water and next to the road in various sections, taking you past Point Joe and the Unsettled Sea (about 1.5 miles from Asilomar), China Rock (~2.25 miles), then Bird Rock (3 miles). This is as far as I have ventured on foot, but the trail definitely continues.

My goal is to have someone drop me off at Asilomar then pick me up at Carmel Beach an hour or so later (it's about 9 miles total if you stick to the eater).

By the way, walking into Pebble Beach is free! Driving costs $9.

Sunset locations

by kaifinnegan

Hi. Would like to know thw best places in PG for sunset viewing and the best beaches to walk along....would like a hotel on the beach with west view, am willing to pay more for the beauty of the view!!

The entire coast along Pacific Grove is beautiful. The sandy beaches around Asilomar are perfect for ocean sunsets. There is free roadside parking, but be aware that a lot of others will be doing the same thing.

There are several B & Bs along the coast in Pacific Grove, but I think your best viewing would be simply by walking on the beach or along the tidepools.

I wouldn't bother paying to go on the 17 mile drive for sunset views.

I agree that Asilomar is a great and very popular spot for sunsets... and really the only place in PG to see a sunset. From the southern end of Asilomar you can walk into the Pebble Beach community to the great Moss Beach at Spanish Bay which is a beautiful spot for a walk.

Less busy beaches for nice sunsets and sandy walks include the big sandy beaches of Monterey and Sand City near the Best Western Beach Resort along Sand Dunes Drive (Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Monterey,+CA,+USA&ie=UTF8&ll=36.613392,-121.859622&spn=0.017637,0.02532&z=15&om=1)

Carmel is often voted as Monterey County's best beach to watch a sunset.

BTW - there are not many PG hotels with a beach view to the west. The Asilomar Conference Center (http://www.visitasilomar.com/) has some rooms that face west a few hundred yards from the water, with easy trails connecting you to Asilomar Beach and Moss Beach at Spanish Bay.

The Beachcomber Inn (http://www.montereypeninsulainns.com/home.html) is also just off the Asilomar Beaches, but I don't think any rooms face the water. This seems to be pretty basic lodging.

Another option is the lodge at Spanish Bay if you don't mind spending $500 a night!

From this page (http://www.montereypeninsulainns.com/) the opening photo shows the beach at Asilomar and the golf Links at Spanish Bay. The cluster of buildings at the center of the photo is the Asilomar Conference Center, and the L-shaped hotel at the very bottom center of the photo is the Beachcomber Inn.
