When can we come and see the monarch butterflies

by edcorsaro

My wife and I are coming to Pacific Grove the first week of October. Is this too soon to see the monarch butterflies? Thanks

Re: When can we come and see the monarch butterflies

You should get lucky as the butterflies do come in October, but they do not have a calendar so the time varies a bit.....d:o)

Pacific Grove is one of the neatest beach towns in California. You are going to be able to witness the arrival of the Monarch Butterflies, if the weather patterns hold true or what ever guides these beauties to the Pacific Grove site. I have a tip in my VT Pacific Grove pages regarding the location. Also the website for the butterflies (look to the top for "I am interested in: and click on "butterflies": http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/736c8/b8435/6/

Yes, Santa Cruz and Pacific Grove are just two of the cities in California where the Monarch Butterfly roosts. The list of groves are found in the Pismo Beach Monarch Grove website: http://www.monarchbutterfly.org/grove.htm

Travel Tips for Pacific Grove

St. Mary's By the Sea -- PG's oldest church

by Ewingjr98

St. Mary's By the Sea, located at Central Avenue & 12th Street in PG, was completed and opened on July 10th, 1887, making this the oldest surviving church in a town built around religion. This beautiful and large structure is painted a deep red on the outside and constructed mainly of local redwood lumber. It is built in the old English Gothic style and stands in the pines within view of the Monterey Bay. the inside of the church is finished in natural pine, cedar, redwood and walnut, polished and varnished. The steeple stands 75 feet above the ground. The parish hall was designed by architect Ernest Coxhead, and built in 1893. Also of interest are the two Tiffany windows from 1922.

Each July for more than 50 years the church has held an Antiques Show and Sale; admission is about $6.

Pacific Grove's Smaller Parks

by Ewingjr98

Everyone knows about beautiful Asilomar State Beach, Lovers Point Park, and the Monarch Butterfly Refuge, but there are other quiet, natural places in Wander in Pacific Grove, that have fewer tourists. Besides Asilomar, the city has about 168 acres of shoreline parks, local neighborhood parks, and larger community parks.

George Washington Park is just over 20 acres and is the city's largest park. It is mostly forest with a few trails, but it also has a ball field and picnic areas.

Shoreline Park Network consists of 23.4 acres, and is really a series of smaller parks and recreational areas on the coastal edge of the city, including Lovers Point, Berwick Park, Perkins Park, and the Coastal Recreation Trail.

Rip Van Winkle Park is a 20 acre park next to Pebble Beach that has walking paths allowing access to 17 Mile Drive.

John Denver in Pacific Grove

by Ewingjr98

Each time I visited the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary, I have noticed the strange park bench with the engraving "John Denver: The Legacy Continues." Thinking it was just some fanatic's last tribute to this fine singer, I cocked my head then moved on. Recently I was listening to what is arguably John Denver's best song, "Country Roads," and I did a search on his life on Wikipedia.

On 12 October 1997, after taking off from Monterey Airport around 5pm, he performed several touch and go landings. Then he flew west t to the ocean and circled around to Pacific Grove where he crashed 150 yards off of Point Pinos in the Pacific Ocean at about 5:30pm. Denver was flying an unfamiliar aircraft that was low on fuel with improperly marked controls, while his pilot's license was suspended...a recipe for disaster.

The coastal area where he crashed is informally known as John Denver Beach, and it hosts an annual pilgrimage of John Denver fans of the anniversary of his death. The beach is located at the turnout on Ocean View Drive between Acropolis and Asilomar Streets, 1.2 miles northwest of the Monterey Bay Aquarium

There is also a tree planted in his memory and a plaque honoring John Denver in the Monarch Sanctuary. Finally, there is a small "Christmas Tree" named Alfie at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, named in honor of Denver's Christmas poem about a tree named Alfie. On 23 September 2007, local papers reported that a memorial plaque was placed at John Denver Beach, but on my visit in November 2007 there was still just a sign announcing intent to install the plaque.

Wildlife at Asilomar State Beach

by Ewingjr98

Like other areas of the Monterey Peninsula, Asilomar State Beach is full of a variety of wildlife. Though you'll rarely spot otters, sea lions or seals on this unprotected ocean coast, land-based animals are very common here. From the curiously goofy California ground squirrels to the always-hungry deer and seagulls, you are sure to see a lot of animals if you spend much time here.

It is illegal to feed the animals according to California state law. Visitors should use caution to not approach the wildlife, even if they seem tame. Deer can also be aggressive, especially during certain times of the year such as mating season (known as "the rut"). Raccoons are ferocious little devils and could bite your finger off.

Vivolo's Chowder House

by Ewingjr98

A nice little seafood restaurant in Pacific Grove... we stopped in one night for dinner after deciding the seafood places along Cannery Row were just too touristy. The small restaurant was relatively busy on a Friday, and we chose a table near the window overlooking the street. For my meal, I enjoyed a unique dish called ciopino, which was a mix of about 5 types of seafood in a tomato broth forming a hearty soup. Laura had the sand dabs (something we have never heard of on the East Coast), which she really liked. We also had a few Anchor Steam drafts.
