More about Marriott's Shadow Ridge Villas at Palm Desert

by nyc10025

There are scores of great golf courses in this area. I don't play but I know the one where we were staying (Marriott's Shadow Ridge) was beautiful.

Very Relaxing

This resort was awesome! This is the second Marriott my wife and I have stayed at (The other was in Orlando, The Grande Vista). From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. We acutally arrived 2 hours early and thought that maybe the room wasnt available, however they had the room prepared and ready for us to occupy. We had a 1 bedroom unit with the full kitchen. It was clean, and appeared as if it was a new unit. The bathrooms were nicely appointed with a good size shower, and a great tub that could easily fit you and your spouse. Trust me, I am a larger guy!

We spent most of our time lounging around and just relaxing as we both have very stressful jobs. The best part was the balcony, as it overlooked the golf course, and at night was the perfect place to relax and gather your thoughts! I did not play the golf course, however the rates are reasonable after 2 and I would say it is well worth it.

It was nice and hot during the day, but the pool was very cold and took care of that immediately. The pool area is large and also has a great jacuzzi! Perfect at night!

Marriott's Shadow Ridge is definetley worth another trip!!

Perfect for Families!

by A TripAdvisor Member

My family just returned from a week vacation at Marriott's Shadow Ridge. We had a fabulous time and would highly recommend to all! We were in a 2 bedroom condo that slept our entire party quite comfortably. They had all the ammenities of home. We were prepared to cook during our stay and found that the Costco and Albertsons were close enough to make quick food runs. We even utilized the gas grills located outside of our building.

We had great weather during our stay, mid to high 80's even low 90's. The Family Pool was great with the kids (8 mos. and 3-1/2 yr. old) and my parents and grandmother enjoyed it as well. They have a new waterslide and baby pool and large infinity pool. We never had a problem finding seats and they have these great covered cabanas with misters and ceiling fans just in case it gets too hot.

Please note that this is a timeshare and you will not receive the services of a hotel here. But with that in mind, if you are willing to drive to restaurants in the local area you won't be disappointed. All the rooms face a portion of the Nick Faldo Championship golf course. My husband played the course and really enjoyed it. They even have tennis courts that are free to use except if you want lessons!

We dined at a few desert restaurants that are great. At The River in Rancho Mirage, Babe's is a great BBQ joint. You won't be disappointed. Also, a favorite of ours is a local restaurant called Murphs Gaslight in Bermuda Dunes. It's been there forever and serves the best pan-fried chicken. It's around $15 per person and they serve it family style with all the fixings...corn bread, crock of soup, salad, veggies, mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits, desert and they even pack up an extra bag of chicken for you to take with you! Yum. It's kinda of out of the way at the Bermuda Dunes airport. It's a real local place...enjoy.

Well, we had a great time and we will be back. We own at Marriott's Maui Ocean Club and I think that this resort was just a great. Perfect for a family getaway...the Palm Desert Area is well worth the visit.

Great Hotel

I read many reviews for many hotels and you just can't find one without a complaint. The Shadow Ridge is a quality place especially for the money. You can't beat the location; only minutes from shopping, restaurants, and golf courses. Pool is very nice and the resort is gated. I felt safe. Partially becuase of the gate and partly because nobody comes to Palm Desert in September. My wife and I went over to the big Marriott resort about three minutes away and that property is NOT nicer. Just bigger and more of hassle to get around there. Too big. Stay at the Shadow Ridge. Its classy, nice and was extremely quiet. Another note, save $21.50 (per person) and skip the Palm Springs Tramway. It's weak and theres better hiking all over the place.

A giant timeshare that rents rooms

Definitely not what you would call a vacation resort. We decided to stay one night at Shadow Ridge on our way back from Scottsdale, Arizona to try it out. Yes, we read some of the unfavorable reviews on this website, but it looked nice anyway. Yes, the previous readers are correct in that this place is enormous, and there is only one restaurant located on the top of the hill and you need a car to get around (we drove to the pool!) On the day we checked out, housekeeping was at our door by 8 am, knocking continuously until I answered it. Even after explaining to housekeeping that we were checking out, she still required that we give her a time to come back and clean. Isn't housekeeping supposed to know who is checking out on any particular day? It was not enjoyable to be woken up especially when you have a 10 am check-out time as it is! Another instance of bad service, the front desk tells us the pool bar is open until 7 pm. so we head over. There were two gentlemen at the bar at 5:45 pm watching a game when we got there. The bartender insisted that the pool closes at 6 pm on Friday. So at 6 pm, she pulls the roll down window 3/4 of the way down so no one could watch the television while she proceeded to close out her station. Considering there was only a couple minutes left in the game, that was extremely rude. I think one of the gentlemen stayed behind and tried to at least listen to the rest of the game since it would have been over by the time he got back to his room!!! You could not even peek under the roll down to see the TV, she had pulled it down far enough so you could not see the TV!!! This particular Marriott does not have the particular type of service one would expect from a Marriott. This definitely is like a budget motel in a beautiful golf course setting - which we didn't know was closed the day we arrived.

A Great Vacation

We are owners at three other Marriott Vacation Club Resorts and were not disappointed with Shadow Ridge or the Palm Springs area. This was our first trip to the area and we truly enjoyed ourselves. The area is beautiful with much to do including hiking, biking, sunbathing, swimming, golfing, and amusement parks and the CA coast within driving distance. We had a fabulous time hiking at the top of the mountain where the Palm Springs Tram drops you off. If you go, hike into the wilderness area where you must stop at the rangers office to obtain a permit, free of charge. Your away from the crowds and in touch with Mother Nature at her finest. We also had a great time at Disneyworld and we took a tour in a Hummer H2 at Joshua Tree National Park and did some hiking there as well. The weather Thanksgiving week was perfect, sunny and about 81 degrees every day but one.

The Shadow Ridge resort is what I would call, elegant and peaceful. It is not a full blown hotel resort as it is a part of Marriott's Vacation Club program. So understand this before you go. If you want daily maid/room service. Do not go. If you want a 1300sqft villa with two bedrooms, two balconies with a great view of the mountains and the golf course on site, a full kitchen, and laundry facilities in your room, you must go! The countertops in both the kitchen and the bathrooms are granite. Since Shadow Ridge has lock off rooms, the second bedroom also has a mini kitchen with grantie countops, a small fridge, mini microwave, and a small sink. The living room has a sofa/sleeper and a gas fireplace which doesn't generate much heat on those cool desert nights, but does look great!

The resort itself is huge being 312 acres in size and is undergoing additional construction at the far ends of the resort and in the main pool area. There is a Nick Faldo designed golf course on site for the following fees after 2:00pm: $90 for guests, $64 for MVCI owners, and $60 for Shadow Ridge owners.

There is also a club house which houses a golf clothing/accessory store, fitness room, locker rooms with a sauna, steam room, and showers, and a full service restaurant open for lunch and dinner.

There are currently two pools open; one quite and smaller pool area just opened, and the second one is in the main pool area and will be one of two infinity type pools. I say will be because the second pool is closed and is undergoing rennovation. When completed it will be an infinity pool with a children's slide and an interactive play area. They are also building a park/playground area across from the main pool area. The main pool area also contains the pool bar with lunch/grill items to eat and bathrooms to change in. Order the cheeze fries and the bananna smoothie with vanilla ice-cream; they are excellent!

Barbecue grills are located in most cases between the villa buildings, but watch out if grilling in the evening because the sprinklers will just kick on and douse you with water.

We really enjoyed our stay here as it was very peaceful and lovely. We ate at the big JW resort and we much prefer Shadow Ridge. It is newer, more elegant, and quiet in our opinion. I also really enjoyed laying on the chaise lounge chair on the balcony off the master bedroom and enjoying the great weather and scenery. A real treat.

By the way, we stayed in building 1600 on the third floor which was an excellent choice since it is close to the main pool area and has great views from that third floor, which is the top floor.

In conclusion, I could not recommend this resort and area enough. We just may have to retire in the Palm Springs area, better up the retirment contributions immediately, but we will definitely be back to the Shadow Ridge.

Great Vacation!!!

My wife and I stayed at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge for 5 nights (Feb. 8th to Feb. 12th, 2006) and highly recommend this resort. Although the property contains a very beautiful golf course our trip was mainly for shopping, sightseeing, dining and relaxing. The weather was sunny and in the mid 80’s for our trip. The Shadow Ridge Resort is a Marriott Vacation Club property (Timeshare). We are owners at Canyon Villas in Phoenix and Monarch at Sea Pines so we know what to expect when traveling to a MVCI property.
WOW!!! This place is huge, beautiful and awesome. From check-in to check-out we have a very enjoyable experience at the resort and in the Palm Desert area. Our unit was very clean and very quiet. At times, it was like we were the only people staying there. However, we did notice that it was starting to fill up on Friday and Saturday, but emptied out again on Sunday. Just check the Marriott web site for details on the units at this resort. In addition, every Marriott employee that we met was accommodating and very, very pleasant.
In regards to our unit, the accommodations were very clean, modern and comfortable. The furniture and carpeting were very clean (almost new). Our 3rd floor patio in the 3000 building offered beautiful golf course views. Morning walks are beautiful at this place!
We did use the small outdoor pool that was in close proximity to the 3000 Building and it was a heated pool that was very nice. However, there were extensive renovations being dome to the main family pool area and this area was closed (did not hear any noise at all in our unit due to the construction). When completed (mid-March?) this is going to be a great place for families with children. For those of you who prefer more of an adult atmosphere there is a separate Adult Pool next to the Family Pool and another smaller Pool near the 3000 Building on the south end of the property.
The only negative thing we can say is that we had trouble with the wireless Internet access and needed to rent a “bridge” from the front desk. It required a $100.00 deposit, but was completely refunded when we returned the unit at check-out. Our problems went away after we used the “bridge” unit.
In the area, we dined at the Elephant Bar, Devane’s Italian Restaurant, Atlantic Fish & Chips, Hog’s Breath Inn, Bagel Bistro, Benny’s Bagels, Don Diego’s, Bone’s and had great meals at all of these restaurants. In regards to shopping – El Paseo Drive is a wonderful experience, but we were a little disappointed in the Westfield Mall. We also went to the College of the Desert Street Fair (held every weekend) and had a very nice time on Sunday morning (get there early because the parking lots really fill up). This was our first trip to the Coachella Valley and we can’t wait to get back!
Happy and Safe Travels to All!

Week in Palm Desert Area

by nyc10025

My wife and I spent a week at the Marriott's Shadow Ridge resort in Palm Desert, CA and also visited the nearby towns: Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella and Thousand Palms. It is a beautiful area because you are in a desert valley and it is surrounded by mountains. Wherever you go, the mountains are in view. We went in late March and the weather was great (especially since we were coming from cold NYC)--temperatures in 60s and 70s and almost always sunny.

Marriott's newly opened resort is the height of comfort and opulence. Of course were it not for friends I wouldn't be staying here. As they say if you have to ask HOW MUCH CAN'T afford it. I didn't and I couldn't.

A very impreesive entrance indeed
