Hikes

by HELEN

Hello!
I will be spending a weekend in Palm Spring in the middle of February. Can anyone please recommend any good hikes in the area?

Thank you in advance!

Take the Tram to the top. It will be chilly and snowy but some great hikes. Get off before dark as it will be very cold at night.

I have not been there in winter but can imagine that there is a lot of snow in the higher reaches of San Jacinto Mountain. I have seen that they hire snow shoes, this would perhaps be an exciting option.

You might also want to have a look at hiking at nearby Joshua Tree National Park.

I know Palm Springs fairly well, but never hiked there. The Tram is really not hiking, but it is fun though....d:o)

However there is some information readily available......

Erik, I have to agree with Griff on this one. You take the PS Tram to get to the top. Once up there, there are trails. Winter has snow shoe hikes at the top of the mountain in some great snow and Summer has the hiking boots dirt trails. There is also a great restaurant at the top, Peaks Restaurant (fine dining) has a great view of the desert below. Pines Restaurant (casual dining) and the Lookout Lounge, a full cocktail bar. For the warmer climes on the desert floor, Indian Canyons has many trails and beautiful surroundings. See the Indian Canyon website: http://www.hiking-in-ps.com/indiancanyons.php

Yup, I stand corrected onj that one. Forgot the trails from up top. Not really my forte, so was not really thinking clearly. Thanks for clearing up what might have come across as conflicting information to the Original Poster....d:o)

Travel Tips for Palm Springs

Delight in a Date Shake

by marinarena

Date Shake!

Delicious, rich and perfect on a hot date in Palm Springs. Going to the California desert and having a date shake go hand in hand. Fresh dates, which are staples of the area, are grinded in the milky vanilla mixture. Sometimes, banana is combined with dates in the shake. From my efforts, it's hard to find an establishment who makes one in Los Angeles and Orange county areas. However, in many ice cream parlors, restaurants and even at the Palm Springs Air Museum, the date shake is on the menu. For about $3-$5 indulge on this local fave!

Some shops famous for date shakes:

Palm Springs Fudge & Chocolates, 221 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, (760) 416-0075

Hadley's (888) 854-5655 (nearby in the city of Cabazon)

Bump & Grind

by MrJAG

The bump and grind hike is great. It's about 1.5 hours round trip and offers some great views of Rancho Mirage and the surronding area. The path is crushed rock, but beaten down enough for dogs, bikes, etc. Some parts get a little steep, but it's definitely not hardcore hiking. good hiking shoes, some water. maybe binoculars for views at the top. The sun can beat down on you so maybe some sun screen or hat. On hot days definitely do the hike early morning.

Best Deli in the Desert

by Donrogelio about Sherman's

This place is packed for a reason. The menu is EXTENSIVE and the service and the prices are great. Sherman's has salads, and an extensive breakfast and lunch menu; but who can go to a deli and resist the pastrami or corned beef on rye? If you are into desserts, this is the sweet spot for you.

8500ft up in a glass cage, moving round as you go up, trying to take photographs and video was a real trial. On reaching the top there are many trails to walk, and we found ourselves up there for hours. It was like being in another world. We really enjoyed the experience and finished up with a drink in the cafe which was very welcome. There is a ranger that walks around the area and looks out for your all. There was a little shop to buy a few gifts, postcards etc too.
