Palm Springs to Big Bear

by priscillaqod

A needed break from Seattle weather:) Nice four day trip to Sunny Southern Cali.

My friend Jennifer and I went to Southern California in January '01. The weather was perfect, just what we needed after a long rainy winter. These photos were taken in the many canyons just outside of Palm Springs.

Thinking about it and laughing of how we left the mountains of Washington to go snowboarding at Big Bear ski resort in Big Bear, CA. Its just amusing to me. We went snowboarding for the day, it was snowing. A very different kind of snow than what Washington produces. I had a blast and love the powdary stuff. However, my friend thought the snow was clumpy and just icy enough to be painful. I loved it, but did not like the blizzard we got caught in. A real adventure.

These are the thoughts of my friend: "On another note, it was awesome going from a very urban setting (LA) to a desert oasis (Palm Springs) to the hard-core desert (29 Palms) to a snowy mountain top (Big Bear), all within 100 miles of eachother. Southern California has its share of problems, but it's a blessed place in my book." I agree with her.

Just don't go on a Monday or Tuesday. The Winter Adventure Center that rents snowshoes is closed on those days. No rentals after 2:30pm. Need to wear Socks and shoes for sure, but winter attire is suggested. Of course, it depends on how much snow and where you want to walk to see if snowshoes are needed. Travel Tips for Palm Springs

Hiking

by HELEN

When I was researching where to go hiking in palm springs, almost everyone suggested hiking trails that are driving distance away. While there, I realized that you don't have to go far, just walk out of your hotel and head toward the nearest mountain you see. We stayed at the Viceroy and all we did was walk about 5 minutes to the base of the mountain where one of multiple trails started. We started hiking up a trail with a goal or walking up for 30 or so minutes and turning around and walking back down. While walking up, we ran into multiple people who pointed us in all different directions(meaning there are multiple hiking trails you can do). You can even hike all the way up to the top of the aerial tramway station. That hike is a bit treacherous, though. Our hike took about 2 hours round trip. We started at one end of downtown and finished at another. It was a great adventure.... Wear hiking or running shoes, and be careful.

Agua Calient Women Bronze Sculpture

by Yaqui

This lovely sculpture is just one of many center pieces the city has all over Palms Springs. So keep your eyes out for them.

Plaque reads:
Doug Hyde American Born, 1946
Agua Calient Women, 1994 Bronze
Commissioned with funds provided by City of Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, 1994.

Located at Tahquitz Canyon Way and E of Indian Canyon. Just a street over from Palm Canyon Way

Not Just Breakfast

by Yaqui about Elmer's Pancake & Steak House

This is a really nice restaurant. We were seated right away. I will say the tables were a little close. Yet, the food was good and the service was prompt and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant to especially those with kids because they have lots to chose from on their menu. It was wasy to find and easy to pull in and out of the parking lot.

Skiing and Hiking

by explorer02

When one thinks of Palm Springs, hiking and cross country skiing rarely cross the mind. However, atop the aerial tramway lies the Mount San Jacinto State Park. They have over 54 miles of hiking trails, and in the winter the Adventur Center rents Cross Country skis and snow shoes.

If you go in the winter dress warm, or in layers and be prepared for snow.
