Hiking, kayaking, horse riding, and more
by elji
If you are visiting Palo Alto, San Francisco, Oakland, or anywhere else in this general area, and you are interested in active outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, horseriding, etc., the Outdoor Adventure Club offers many activities year round. I am not a member, but I have been on several enjoyable kayaking trips with the club. Costs for activities are usually from $40 to $150 for a day trip and more for an overnight trip. Depending on the activity, you may need a rain jacket, swimsuit, appropriate shoes, etc. You may also need to have transportation to a meeting point although there are some opportunities at times to ride with someone else who is going to the event. Usually the major equipment (such as a kayak and life jacket) is provided and often lunch is provided as well.
Good food and good beer
by pmarshuk about Gordon Biersch
One of the best brewery restaurant chains I went into in the states. The beer is excellent - especially the Marzen. And the food well presented and tasty in managable portions.
I prefered the one in San Jose because of the courtyard and live jazz sessions but the Palo Alto venue is also well worth a visit I love ribs and here did not disappoint. great BBQ sauce.
Mind you I also remember having some very good prawns the last time I visited.
Stanford Cactus Garden
by AlbuqRay
Started sometime between 1880 and 1883, you would not expect a cactus garden to be on the Stanford campus. You would think the climate is not right, but some specimens have done quite well. It is really more a garden of succulents (cacti are succulents), since many of the plants are not cacti. It is formally named the Arizona Garden and is located near the Mausoleum. The beds form the shape of a turtle.
Palo Alto: Not Just Stanford's Home
by Lhenne1
Palo Alto sits just south of San Francisco, in the Silicon Valley. The city is most often noted for being the home of Stanford University, a prominent and well respected university.
Aside from the university, visitors will find parks filled with wildlife and beautiful flowers. University Avenue pops with the enthusiasm of college students. Unique restaurants, bars, boutiques and public art fill the streets of Palo Alto.
This truly is one of the small cities where you can say "there is something for everyone." Whether you crave the newest in technological advancements or a cute new vintage skirt, Palo Alto will provide.
GOING TO PALO ALTO
by heywinks
The first time I came here was with my aunt & sister when I was a high school student.
I got another chance to come here on my weeklong trip to San Francisco on a layover going back to Japan. It definitely looks different than how I remembered it.
This is such a beautiful city to visit! The downtown area reminds me of Harvard Square in Boston except that it`s just one long street.
