    Accomodation at a lighthouse

    by

During our short stop at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse, I saw that the houses around it are part of a hostel. Myself did not stay there, so it is hard to tell how it is, but the location is quite interesting. From the house on you can start of to have a look at the Ano Nuevo State Reserve, where lots of different birds, whales and elephant seals can be seen. The hostel itself is quite remote, but easy to find due to the lighthouse beside.

Unique Quality: There is the large lighthouse, with the only working fernel lense in CA. They only light it once a year, but its still beautiful! Plus they have a beautiful beach with close to no visitors, and an amazing hot tub on the cliffs below the lighthouse for hostel guests! This hostel is VERY nice and VERY inexpensive!

If you are in Pescadero, drive out to HWY 1 and turn left. Drive down the HWY for approximately 10 minutes and on your right you will see a large lighthouse. Follow Pigeon P

If you are driving down Highway One south from San Francisco then make sure you stop off at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Follow the signs to the lighthouse and hostel. The area was pretty deserted when we visited, though I understand it gets pretty crowded at the weekends as it is a very scenic place.

One of the tallest lighthouses in America, this 115 feet high beauty was a stunning white against the blue sky. The interior has been closed to the public since 2001, and they are currently trying to raise fund for its restoration.

Wander around the lighthouse to the edge of the cliff and you may spot some sea lions sunning themselves on the craggy rocks just off the cliffs. A great place for coastal views and photos, just don't go there if a tsunami has been forecast - apparently it is in the "Tsunami Hazard Zone".

If you fancy staying overnight in the area there is a hostel located right at the lighthouse.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Several historic lighthouses are scattered along California’s jagged coastline. One such structure is the Pigeon Point Lighthouse at Pescadero. It is found about halfway between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz off Highway 1. Take Pigeon Point Road from Highway 1 to get there.

The Pigeon Point Lighthouse began service in 1872. It helped guide ships along the coastline. The lighthouse is home to a small State Historic Park. Although the lighthouse is not open to the public, the grounds are still open and are free. On the grounds you can see the exterior of the lighthouse, explore the view from the coastal bluffs, and visit a small museum. The museum is free and has exhibits concerning the history of the lighthouse, the lighthouse’s now retired Fresnel lens, and local shipwrecks.

While traveling the coastal highway, Pigeon Point Lighthouse can make for an interesting stop. Although in my last visit, a considering wind was blowing in from the Ocean. A hostel is located in the former lighthouse keeper's housing.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse is located at 210 Pigeon Point Road just off Highway 1 at Pescadero.

Pescadero and Pigeon Point Lighthouse

by sue_stone

Pescadero is a small town located a few miles east off Highway 1, though the area known as Pescadero seems to cover a larger radius, encompassing the scenic Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

The actual town didn't seem too exciting, but there are some decent dining options here, which is what drew us off the highway in search of lunch.

Really enjoyed our visit to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse and highly recommend stopping here even if just to stretch your legs for a few minutes and do some sea lion spotting.
