HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS GROVER BEACH-PISMO BEACH: NEAR THE PISMO BEACH OUTLET STORES

Location is key to this Holiday Inn Express. Within a couple of miles are the Outlet Stores of Pismo Beach, the main street of Pismo Beach, the smooth sand beaches, the fishing pier at Pismo Beach, and the Monarch Butterfly Grove. Within ten miles and you are at the Pismo sand dunes, San Luis Obispo, the start of Hwy 1, Avila Beach, and Edna Valley wineries. Many fine restaurants are located nearby.

The hotel has two separate buildings and a lobby in the center of the driveway. One building is next to Oak Park Blvd and tends to be a little noisy. Try to get a room in the 2nd building that is not near the street. I asked for a room in the 2nd building and it was very quiet at night. The room was spacious with an outside balcony but the downside is that the A/C unit was old fashioned and did not get cold enough for my liking. Price wise, it is hard to beat the nightly charge considering that this is a prime area near the beaches and the wine country of San Luis Obispo. The reception staff were friendly and helpful which made for a pleasant stay. Now, if the A/C could get a little cooler.

The bed was very comfortable and being king size even better. The pool and spa are a little bit of a walk down a hill but very private. The included buffet breakfast was very nice featuring a cheese omelet and sausage patty one day and scrambled eggs and bacon the next day.

State Beach Oceano Campground: A Campground in the State Park

Oceano Campground has 42 sites with water and electric hook-up for trailers and RVs up to 36 foot, as well as 40 additional sites without electricity for those up to 31 foot. Picnic tables and fire rings, as well as coin-operated hot showers and restrooms are provided. Oceano also has a wheel chair accessible campsite in the hookup area. The odd thing about this campground is that the sites do not have sewer, and there is no dump station in this section of the park. You have to drive north to the other State Beach Campground to use a dump. In Oceano, you may make reservations for sites year round by calling 1-800-444-7275 or on line at reserveamerica.

If you intend to drive your vehicle or an ATV or dune buggy on the beach, this campground is located in the vehicle allowed section of the beach, and is very close to the access point. There is a pleasant lagoon bordering the campground, and a nice, short hiking trail that circles lagoon.

North Beach Campground: My Favorite Campground

North Beach is the second of two campgrounds located in Pismo State Beach. This campground has no hook-ups, but there is a dump, as well as coin operated showers, and restrooms. There are 103 sites for RVs up to 31 foot, and tents. Some are grassy and open, others have a few trees or bushes, the sites are quite well spaced, so that you have a more private feeling than a lot of other campgrounds. Reservations may be made from around the end of May to early September. The rest of the year this campground is first come, first serve. During the season that reservations may be made, you may do this by calling 1-800-444-7275 or on line atreserveamerica.

This campground is located in the area of the state beach where vehicles are not allowed, as well as near an area where thousands of Monarch Butterflies winter. There is a nice dune walk in the area, and a golf course nearby.
