Great hotel on the water
Ok, I grew up around this place, have eaten at the restaurant here several times during my life and according to my brother - our dad spent his honeymoon here. Kim and I ended up spending our wedding night here prior to heading off to Tunis. We paid a bit more for a suite but it was worth it for one special night.
Had a tub I could fit in even though it drains a bit on the loud side and great balcony views.
Normally you would not catch me in a place like this as hostels are a better value in my mind but the wife was paying so why not enjoy.
Unique Quality: They provide free bikes for guests to take for the day. The restaurant on the other side of the parking lot has great Sunday brunch.
Directions: In King Harbor
Luxury at the ocean
We were checking this hotel out when we were planning our wedding. We didn't chose it, since we got married abroad, but it is very nice. The view from the lobby is amazing and there is a HUGE window that enhances it. The rooms seem nice, although quite expensive.
There are good food choices on teh grounds, and many other choices within walking distance. There is a nice Sunday brunch offered at the Portofino, also.
Unique Quality: Incredible location and view
The staff was nice and the lobby was great, especially when we scored the comfy arm chairs in front of the fireplace.
We stayed in the marina-view side which boasts a parking lot view (see the attached picture). The ocean view rooms overlook a channel behind the breakwater; we saw sea lions in the channel. If you are going for a romantic weekend, I'd probably try to get an ocean view room on the upper floor.
The annoying thing was that it was difficult to make a reservation because the national reservation system is not coordinated with the local reservation system which handles special rates for weddings, etc.
We stayed there in May, 2005.
Unique Quality: It feels like they tried to polish up a budget hotel to make it a luxury hotel. The hotel and room layout was a little odd (the rooms were big enough but the hotel itself seemed cramped) and there were some tacky features like foam tape on the sliding doors (apparently to simulate window panes and spruce it up a bit on the outside).
The hotel is a 10 minute walk or so from the pier.
Directions: At the marina.

MARINAS GALORE IN REDONDO BEACH
You are at the Pacific Ocean in sunny Southern California and sitting in the water, just feet away from you are hundreds of boats. All sizes and all shapes reside in many of the marinas that call Redondo Beach, home port. One of the largest in Redondo is the Redondo Beach Marina with everything from fishing trips to eating fish at a restaurant, this is one marina not to miss. Part of the total Redondo Beach Marinas includes the private Port Royal Marina and the Portofino Marina part of The Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club that started it all with building this man made peninsula and calling the hotel the Portofino Inn. Nearby is another marina in Redondo Beach, connected by the waterway and the breakwater is the King Harbor Marina.
Only a few blocks separates the marina area from the Redondo Beach Pier where you can fish from the pier without a fishing license. The Pier area also has the International Boardwalk with many shops and restaurants for you to enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk. A short drive south of the pier will bring you to the Riviera Village or just the Village which is like a different city all by itself. Contained in about six blocks of Redondo Beach is just about everything you need to have a pleasant day or a couple of days at the beach.
I had read some of the reviews before going to this hotel so i had an idea of what to expect. We stayed here because of the event we were attending was taking place here and we got a discounted rate. I had called the hotel at around noon to confirm reservations and to verify the room was going to be ready for us at around 3pm. The lady said the room would be ready and that check in time was at 3pm. We arrive at the hotel a little after 3pm and was told our room was not quite ready it should just be a few minutes. A few minutes past and was told it would be more like 30 minutes. We were in no hurry and were visiting some friends in the lobby so we were patient. The gal appoligized several times and gave us 2 drink vouchers at the hotels bar for any 2 cocktails free, so that was nice. When we finally get to our room we were satisfied. we were only staying the night and would only be in the room a total of maybe 8 hrs, most of it asleep, so we weren't picky. The room was a little small but very nicley decorated. The bathroom had very nice, new fixtures and well decorated. The view of the parking lot from our balconey was not great. There was no alarm colck radio, just a wind up alarm clock. To listen to music you had to pay for it. There was no MTV, CMT, or VH1, no free music. Everything cost extra. There was a minibar and refreshments in the fridege but for a price. A soda was $3, a beer $6. They put a basket of goodies in there and then list how much it cost for every single item. We were surprised that nothing was included in the room except for the coffee. The prices were outrageouse. I was afaid to use the toilet paper, they might charge me for it. For the price of the rooms you'd expect more perks than free coffee. No free breakfast, shuttles to/from the airport, but the bed was very comforatable. No full length mirror either. Besides the comforatable bed Motel 6 would have been just fine. At least with some of the cheaper hotels you get a Continetal Breakfast. I am glad we only stayed the one night and at a discounted rate.
Nothing could have ruined my wedding day, but staying at this hotel came close. The staff was totally rude. Despite our wearing full wedding attire, we did not even receive a warm greeting, let alone a congratulations. They weren't going to let us check in even though we had prepaid for the room, because we had forgotton our credit cards. After 15 minutes of embarassment, arguing, and emptying our pockets of all cash for a security deposit, the manager finally permitted us to go to our rooms. The room below us had 6 people partying on the balcony until 2 o'clock in the morning. Despite our several pleas with the front desk, they did nothing about it. It was a complete dissappointment.
I just found out about this website and wanted to offer my review of the Portofino.
December 19, 2005 - My family had 2 rooms, we stayed for 2 nights and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone !
The rooms had mold in the bathrooms and that was the reason everyone in our party had horrible headaches after spending one night in our rooms. When we were checking out we found the mold behind peeling wallpaper in the bathrooms. The vanities couldn't be used because the drawers were filthy from water damage, the carpeting was very worn, in some spots torn. My daughter was so ill upon returning to Arizona, she had to be treated for what was later explained as allergic reaction to mold. I wrote the hotel about the problems we experienced and was offered for me only a two night stay in September 2006 to visit them after their renovation was completed. I returned their certificate with a refusal explanation. My daughter notified the health department of the conditions at the Portofino at the suggestion of her doctor.
The hotel needs to gut the bathrooms in rooms 209 and 211.
Loved the Location!

We stayed at this property for 15 nights because of its proximity to the ocean, and our son's apartment whom we were visiting over the holidays.
We had a third floor marina view room which was lovely. If you stay on this side of the hotel (much less expensive than the ocean view), by all means request the third floor as the parking lot becomes much less of an issue. We spent many enjoyable hours on the balcony watching the boats bob in the bay. Because of the holidays, many of the boats were festooned with colorful lights and decorations.
The king-sized bed was extremely comfortable, and we appreciated the large bathroom which had a separate enclosure (with door) for the tub and toilet. A separate shower, double sink, and plenty of storage filled the remaining room. The closet is quite large with louvered doors, and there is a full-length mirror. There was also a small separate seating area with its own windows, table and chairs. The room had two telephones.
The service personnel were professional and helpful, and the maid service was excellent. There is a large sitting area off the main lobby which is beautifully decorated, has limitless ocean views, a fireplace, and a small bar.
We paid around $180.00 a night, plus the $15.00 parking fee. This included the "Breakfast on the Bay" package which entitled us to full access to their breakfast menu which was both abundant and outstandingly delicious. Breakfast is served in a restaurant adjoining the marina with both inside and outside seating, and the view is delightful.
We loved the proximity to the ocean, and enjoyed being able to walk all the way to the Redondo State Pier along the ocean. Seals and pelicans frolicked everywhere.
Unfortunately we will not be returning on our next visit in 2006, as prices have skyrocketed. This time we will stay at the Best Western Sunrise which is still a short walk to the ocean, and has rates that are more in keeping with out fixed incomes.
An excellent place for a family holiday
We have just returned from a lovely holiday in California and I wanted to update the record about the Portofino hotel and yacht club. The hotel was lovely but it is not true that all their renovations are complete, a great many of the bedrooms and a substantial part of the restaurant are currently being renovated and builders are very evident on the site. However, this did not detract from our enjoyment of the hotel. The location is superb, lovely views over the Pacific ocean, our bedrooms were beautiful and the place is very well situated to explore Southern California. The hotel staff were wonderful and couldn't have done more to make our stay enjoyable. Food in the restaurant was very good quality and beautifully presented. If we have any criticisms it is that after we left and settled our bill they managed to charge two more accounts to our credit card and we don't know why. We are trying to sort this out and hope this will not spoil what was otherwise a very memorable holiday.
All the negative comments are true. The place is still being remodeled. We had no water until 6 p.m. the day we arrived and had invasive painters outside during the day. The heater triggered the smoke alamr. The upgrade, by phone, to the top floor was ignored; we were given a room on the second floor. It's a long way to a real beach. The view is simply of water and the sound is of noisy seals. The room was comfortable, although lacking drawer space. The free bicycles were the best part. We discovered the best luxury beach spot in the area: The Beach House at Hermosa Beach. We'll stay there next time.
