Redcrest Resort: Sleeping with the Giants

The Redcrest Resort is in the heart of the Avenue of the Giants amongst some of the world's tallest trees. This is truly a special experience, especially at night. There is absolutely no light polution. You can see the stars like nowhere else and you feel as if you are guests among the trees.

The cabins are quite nice, with spacious choices and kitchens. They are a bit rustic, but it really fits the situation nicely. The price is very reasonable, too.

Motel 6: Not in the park

It is possible to camp in the park. But we were on a road trip, not bringing any camping equipment. We chose to stop at Motel 6 in Arcata a little south of the park the night before, and in Eugene, Oregon after the hike. The motels in this chain look the same everywhere, but the prices vary! For three adults in a room with two queen size beds, we paid USD 53.89 in Arcata, 65.18 in Eugene and a third price somewhere else.

The standard is OK, the three places we tried on this trip were clean and everything functioned as it should. Parking availability is good. Breakfast is not included.

Elk Prairie Campground: Living with the Elk

Redwood National and State Park has four campgrounds, all within the State Park areas of Redwood. Be aware that there are no trailer hook-ups offered in any of the campgrounds. We stayed in the Elk Prairie campground near Prairie Creek, which is one of the campgrounds that is open all year. This campground has 75 sites for tents or RVs, with a size limit of up to 24 feet for trailers, and 27 feet for RVs. There are fire pits at each campsite, plus a dump station, and restrooms with showers available in the campground. This campground contained both forested sites and prairie sites. I thought the forested sites were prettier and certainly more private, but we chose a prairie site so we could use our solar panels, although, as gray as it was during our stay, our solar panels were only a small help in charging our batteries. Still, it turned out that we really liked the prairie, as we saw many Roosevelt elk grazing in the prairie near our trailer.

All of the campgrounds allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of the park, and give you opportunities to explore the outdoors. From Elk Prairie there are more than 70 miles of hiking or biking trails available. There is a Nature Center with a small bookstore located near the campground, where you can find valuable information to help you enjoy your stay.
