Travel between Sacramento and San Francisco

by sherry6553

What's the easiest way to travel between Sacramento and downtown San Francisco?

Re: Travel between Sacramento and San Francisco

by mccalpin

I have not done this, but I see that Greyhound has 7 buses a day (at least, they do on Wednesday) from Sacramento to SF, for as little as $18 one way. The trip is listed at 2 to 2 1/2 hours (I am sure that traffic can affect that).

This is surely faster than flying, when you consider all the extra time that flying involves...

I assume you don't want to drive? Take the AMTRAK Capital Corridor train, which will get you to Emeryville and then the AMTRAK bus to San Francisco. There is no AMTRAK train station in San Francisco so Emeryville is the closest and then they bus you about 45 minutes depending on where in the city you want to be dropped off. Check the www site and you can book it for the different locations. Sacramento is a big area and there is only one AMTRAK station, which in right in downtown. East of there is Roseville and Rocklin stations if you happed to be out that way.

The easiest way is by car. Just get on I-80 West in Sacramento and stay on it all the way. A car rental many cost more but the ease to get there is worth it. Parking in San Francisco can be expensive is the other drawback. You did ask for the easiest way not the cheapest.

As one poster said, Amtrak is definately the way to go, it is an enjoyable trip. You can book right on the Amtrak web site. If you are going one way, then to rent a car will be very expensive especially when you add in the drop off charges. Traffic can be horrific depending on when you are travelling, especially in the moning commute. The drive between Sacramento and San Francisco is nothing special, just a lot of speeding cars and trucks trying to get somewhere fast. Take the train and enjoy.

Senator Rent-a-car

by Geoff_Wright

As for rental cars. Well, there are several companies in Sacramento, including Hertz, Avis and Enterprise, and these three are all located on 16th Street. Unfortuantely for me, none of them had vehicles available at that time, and I could see me staying in Sacramento for the next 2 days. fortunately I had previously looked up some rental companies on the internet, but only written down one name and telephone number - Senator/New Frontier. I found a phone booth, and gave them a ring, and was very pleased when they said they could provide me with a vehicle immediately. I eventually found their offices, which are located some distance from the town centre, and really I should have taken a taxi. I was very pleased with the vehicle they supplied, which was a Ford Focus Station Wagon (what we in England would call an Estate Car). They weren't able to provide me with the budget/economy car that I had asked for on the 'phone, but I got the Focus at the same rate of $32 a day, with unlimited mileage. I also paid $12 a day for full accidental damage cover, although this was optional. As far as the rental paperwork went, I just had to produce my UK driving licence (which is the older type without a photo), and my Passport. They also asked for a contact telephone number in the States, and I gave them the number of a VT friend where I was going to be after Sacramento. A bonus of walking to the rental company was that I found it easy to drive back to the city the way I had walked! Two or three times around the blocks, trying to locate the train station, where I had left my suitcase, and I felt quite 'at home'!

Excellent place for steaks

by spartan about Stuart Anderson's Black Angus

Anderson’s concept for the restaurant was to provide patrons with a top quality, complete steak dinner at an affordable price, served in a warm, comfortable atmosphere with friendly service. Try the New york Steak (choice center cut of boneless, flavorful New York steak, hand-cut and trimmed daily served with soup or salad, bread and a choice of potatoes or vegetables).

Take a carriage ride...

...through Old Town. As we were strolling through old town, it was hard to miss the horse drawn carriages taht took tourists from one end of old town to the other. Perhaps this is a tourist trap... on second thought it probably is... but I love horses and the idea is just charming. So here it stays, as a Must See Activity.
