Statutes in the capitol building

by rsoto

Where is the statute of Our Lady of Mercy or Catherine McAuley the foundress of the Mercy Order of sisters in the capitol.

Re: Statutes in the capitol building

The Sisters of Mercy statue is just outside and to the left of the Capitals north entrance. Mary Baptist Russell founded the Sisters of Mercy in CA and originally purchased the land for a school. Catherine McAuley was an orginal founder of the Sisters of Mercy and never visited the US. I know of no specific statue of her at the CA Capital.

Travel Tips for Sacramento

Having played hostess to a few...

by Lithiate

Having played hostess to a few out-of-towners in my day, I'd say that an absolute must-see when visiting Sac is East Sacramento. Strolling up and down the 'Fab Forties' is something that very often conjures up images of idyllic nostalgia, either real or imagined. Periodically, usually around a major holiday such as Christmas or Easter, Sacred Heart Church sponsors an event where selected houses are opened to the public for viewing. It's become quite an attraction with both locals and tourists alike. The trees. Especially in the fall, after a particularly wet season. The leaves explode with color and cover the streets and lawns and sidewalks. The way Sacramento smells after a rain shower, or right before one. The way it smells in the early morning of summer... Those trees are so fragrant, but allergic people beware!

Packing List

by Jeannette1

Sacramento is extremely casual. It's very hot in the summer but the temperature does cool down in the evenings which makes it an ideal place to eat outside. This is not a city where people dress up. You can go to some of the best restaurants in Sacramento and even wear jeans if you like. The atmosphere is very relaxed and unpretentious. So, bring your shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, sunscreen and a hat !!

Taxi anyone?

by Geoff_Wright

There's no shortage of taxis in Sacramento. I enquired of one, about the fare from the City centre to the airport, only about 10-15 minutes drive. The usual fare is about $28. Jas (Jaswimder) the cab driver I spoke to, said he could do a special 'deal'. As it turned out, the car rental company (Senator) run a free shuttle service to and from the airport, so just remember that. It's almost the saving of on day's car rental!

Great sandwiches

by BLewJay about Weekend Bazaar & Snack Shop

You can shop for unique items and get a nice meal all at the same time. I had a Ham & Roast Beef Sandwich (with swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, mustard and mayo) on sourdough bread with chips and a soda while LJ had a Turkey Sandwich (with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo) on sourdough bread with chips and a soda.

California State Railroad Museum

by sunnywong

A range of lavishly restored 1860s locomotives, with “cow-catcher” front grilles and bulbous smokestacks. The old passenger station and freight depot, a block south, now serve as the summer depot for a refurbished steam train, which makes a seven-mile, 45-minute round-trip along the river.
