Guided tours

by nancymartino

Do you have guided tours through the Capitol building in GERMAN on Saturdays?
If so, is it necessary to sign up?

There will be a group of 8 Germans visiting on Saturday, May 19th. Only one speaks English but she doesn't know the history of our glorious Capitol.

Anxiously awaiting your answer.

Sorry, don't know the answer. However, if you don't get an answer contact the California State University-Sacramento or University of California- Davis language departments and I am sure they could find a student to help you out.

Maybe Arnold can help you! Seriously though, they do have self-guided tour brochures available in German and other languages.

Travel Tips for Sacramento

FREE VIEW OF THE CAPITOL

by deWilde

FREE VIEW OF THE CAPITOL:
Renaissance Tower located at 801 K Street, 27 Floor. The building is only open to public Mon-Fri during normal business hours. The direction to head once on the 27th floor depends on the elevator you get from the main floor. At any rate, you want to go towards the windows by the penthouse elevator. There you can get a birds eye view of the capitol. It's great and free. We don't really miss much other than family and friends and a few good places to grab a bite. Sac works for some but not us. Fun place to visit though.

Water Fun

by va8eha

You can spend an entire day on Lake Natoma .. exploring the lake and sloughs in a kayak or canoe, windsurfing, swimming, relaxing on the beach, having a picnic .. Of course, half of these go better with sunny, warm weather. :-) Good thing you're in central CA! Plus, if you've pets .. they can join you here. Kayaks and canoes can be rented from the CSUS Aquatic Center - as well as windsurfing equipment and these fun bikes that pedal on water (paddlebikes? You'll look comical, but it's fun!).

Welcome to the shack!!!

by BLewJay about Joe's Crab Shack

If you are looking for a tacky looking shack where the interior feels like a Gulf Coast fishing camp and you are served all different kinds of crabs, then you've found Joe's Crab Shack. It's a lot of fun with great food, dancing and cool tunes. We started off with the Crab & Shrimp Double Dip appetizer (you get the best of both worlds...Joe's Famous Crab dip plus Joe's new Parmesan Shrimp, spinach & artichoke dip and tortilla chips).

For dinner, LJ had the Grilled Pontchartrain (grilled fish fillet topped with shrimp, crabmeat, crawfish tails & mushrooms in a creamy white sauce) while I had Joe's Crab Cake Dinner (Joe's famous lump crabmeat recipe served with parsley potatoes and green beans).

Family Tradition

by LionPrincess about Fats's

This restaurant started in downtown Sacramento in 1939, with Frank Fat's, and has the distinction of being the oldest continuously, family run restaurant in the city. I had the opportunity to visit two of their locations. While I wasn't so impressed by the food, the atmosphere made up.
The first location I visited was Fat's China Bistro. The bar is fabulous, with the bottles sitting on glass shelves and a direct view into the busy kitchen.
The second location I visited was the original Frank Fat's in the city. The restaurant went through an expensive remodel and now boasts fine antique art surrounded by clean futuristic lines. The staff at this location were all dressed in tuxedos and served our table with extreme professionalism. At the China Bistro I enjoyed their Duck Spring Rolls and a glass of 1999 Mondavi Pinot Noir. Good flavor, with a great view of the kitchen.
At Frank Fat's I had the Appetizer plate and Imperial Luncheon which included Mongolian Beef, Hunan Chicken, Chow Mein and Young Shew Fried Rice. We also shared a bottle of Toasted Head Chardonnay. All the items were prepared expertly and had great flavor and texture. The best part of the meal was trying their specialty hot sauces with the diferent appetizer items.

California State Capitol

by cheap_tourist

The California State Capitol is very visitor-friendly. It is open even during Saturdays and Sundays. I visited on a Sunday and joined a free tour of the building. The guide was both informative and entertaining. Our group was allowed to view the legislators at work from the balcony. Apparently, they were working overtime (on a Sunday) because of a budget impasse. It's really amazing to see our elected officials at work.

Behind the Capitol is a beautiful park. The Vietnam War Memorial there is a poignant reminder of the lives lost in that conflict. Fittingly, beside the memorial is a rose garden.
