Fiancee and I are consdiring last-minute changes to our plans, leaving the Sacramento area for LA via 49/99 instead of 5. So...
1) What is the most scenic part of 49?
2) Should we start in Placerville, or in Auburn? ( Auburn requires about 15 miles backtracking for us )
3 ) At what point should we leave 49 and cross over to 99? Mariposa? Oakhurst?
Any advice is welcome. We'll leave Monday morning. Thanks.
My wife and I drove from Mariposa to Columbia(State Historic Park) and back on Highway 49. The drive was very scenic but also a bit nerve-wracking and time consuming thanks to the narrow winding mountain roads full of hairpin turns etc.
When going to Mariposa we first drove from Fresno to Merced via 99 which was a very easy and fast highway. From Merced to Mariposa we took Hwy140 which was a very beautiful road which curved through fields of long golden grass (we made the trip in late July)
When leaving Yosemite we went south on Hwy 41 through Oakhurst to Fresno. I found that drive somewhat less interesting than the others however.
I live in the area and the area is pretty dry and brown this time of the year. Not really worth the time or effort. However, if you really want to I would go to Auburn and then south from there. Depending on your time you could head west to hit Hwy 99 at Hwy 120 (Jamestown) or Hwy 132 (Coulterville) after that you are pretty well stuck to Mariposa and then you might as well take Hwy 41 into Fresno and hit Hwy 99 there. Hwy 41 is probably the best route because it doesn't entail any wasted time going directly west to hit Hwy 99, which would not gain you any distance toward LA.

Perfect for walking, rollerblading, or cycling the American River Bike Trail is one of the best bike trails there is. Starting at Folsom Lake and going all the way to Discovery Park in Sacremento the Trail is 30 miles long and offers a spectaular look at the American River.
My favorite place to start is at Diamond Bar on Folsom Lake. But if you are staying in the city the best place would probably be either Discovery Park or off of Watt Ave. For a map of the trail and river insert this link:

Another great thing to do on the American River is to go rafting. At Sunrise Blvd. there is American River Raft Rentals (http://www.raftrentals.com/) where you can rent rafts and float down the river. They then come and pick you up. This is a perfect activity for families to do because the "rapids" are not dangerous at all. It is a very fun and relaxing activity.
Outstanding drinks (also serve alcohol), but highest kudos to the eccelecticism and quirky friendliness of the staff. Absolutely must visit if you pleasure trading arcane knowledge with strangers while working up a caffeine buzz.
They have a front people-watching porch and larger shaded back deck. Entertainment varies nightly. Vive la Hazlenut latte!
The Firehouse Restaurant building in Old Sacramento was built in 1853. This restaurant serves wonderful food and has a nice shady patio for outdoor dining. Here is a sample of their dessert menu:
Frozen Lemon Grand Marnier Soufflé
with wild field berries, strawberry coulis
Citrus Chèvre Cheesecake
with pistachio nut crust, Bosc pear poached in Cointreau
Flourless Valrhona Chocolate Sin
with Crown Royal bourbon, candied pecans and burnt bananas, served with chocolate sauce and spiced tuile
Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée
with white chocolate macadamia nut cookie and candied nuts
We had a VT meeting at this restaurant. Everybody enjoyed the food.
If you can get tickets for a Kings game, you are lucky. Its always sold out and way too expensive for me to waste money on but lil ARCO is amazing during a game, even when the team sucks and is down by 25. Its the only game in town so if you want sports, thats it.
