These tips are for non-US...

California statewide sales tax is 7.75% on all goods except food items. It is not included in the prices listed on merchandise but will be added at the cash register.
Tips in restaurants are not included and you are free to leave whatever you want. Usually you leave between 12 and 15%. In a more expensive restaurant or if the service is exceptional you may leave 20% of the bill.
Remember that in the US one can take left-overs in a box. It's perfectly appropriate and many waiters will suggest it. If they don't offer, ask for a box (nobody says 'doggy bag' anymore).
Placerville
by Tom_Fields
Placerville is an old Gold Rush town also known as Hangtown for the high number of hangings that took place their during those days. Look for the decorative wheelbarrows on the downtown sidewalks. The town has many historic, picturesque buildings, including:
Tthe Bell Tower, devoted to its volunteer firemen.
The cafe, on Main Street, where the old Hangman's Tree once stood.
Placerville Hardware, the oldest continuously operating hardware store west of the Mississippi River.
Only 40 miles east of Sacramento on Highway 50, Placerville is a good place for a day outing.
The Placerville Downtown Association is the point of contact given here.
Simple Food

This restaurant is actually in Old town Auburn, California. It is a popular spot doing most of its business in breakfasts, our wait was nearly half an hour to get in and it stays like that most mornings. We ate on their outside porch, at picnic benches, under the warmth of their propane heaters. They even have a few tables where you can be seated with your dog. Eggs Benedict and mimosas. There's not much to be done with this dish, but the ham was tender, the muffin was toasted and the holandaise was buttery and smooth.

Sacramento Old Town

A must-see for any Sacramento visitor, this is the mother of all Sacramento attractions. Old Sacramento was the commercial center of the Western United States during the Gold Rush days of the late 1840s and early 1850s.
Today, frontier-styled shops, saloons, museums and boutiques abound in this National Register Landmark and state historic park. Have a bite to eat aboard the Delta King Riverboat, which has been transformed into a
hotel and restaurant, or be entertained as the gold-rushers were at the Eagle Theater, the first building west of the Mississippi built solely for entertainment. Loads of special events, and you can arrive in style in a horse-drawn carriage.
