Great Place in the Napa Valley

My wife surprised me with a overnight trip to Napa/St. Helena for our 20th anniversary and booked one night at The Harvest inn. She had looked at The Golden Haven in Calistoga and (whew!)after driving by and looking at it this morning we are sure glad she didn't! (Looks just like a trailer park as other reviewers said!)
Anyways we stayed in The Rose section of The Harvest Inn and were quite surprised at the spaciousness of our room #103. Complete with a fireplace (didn't have to use it as the weather was quite warm), small refrigerator and a nice dressing area and bathroom the room had a very comfortable King size bed with down pillows. The grounds of the resort are beautiful with flowers and redwood trees. The Rose section looks like the older part of the hotel, the newer area was more modern looking with the trees and plants not nearly grown. Maybe the only drawback to the Rose section is its proximity to the road (Hwy 29) but you couldn't hear any traffic from inside. While at the pool you could hear the rumble of trucks, but the area is enclosed so you actually forget about the noise after a few minutes.
If your looking for a centralized location in the Napa Valley, check out The Harvest inn!
Of course one of the main reasons we go to the Napa area is the food. We've been eating at Mustard's in Yountville for over 20 years and I can honestly say I've NEVER had a bad meal there. Last night we had their onion rings (If you've had them you know!) the as usual amazing Mongolian Park Chop (they figure they've sold over 1.4 MILLION of them the last 23 years) and a Chocolate Hazelnut Tart that I would give up my first born for (Well maybe not for one but 2?.....)
We found out that Cindy Pawlcyn had opened up another restaurant in St. Helena called Cindy's Backstreet Inn so we headed there for lunch. I think I ate the best Calimari of my life today. Also excellent was the Curried chicken salad and another variation of her chocolate torte. Awesome food. The only drawback were the flies outside. Far as I can figure they're hanging around due to the grape crush now taking place in the Napa Valley.

The hotel (more like a B&B) is very unique. The rooms are very large and the view was great. My room looked out to the vinyards. The downside is that my room smelled like a camp fire. This is not a full service hotel. The only food that you can get is the comp breakfast. There is no room service. If you have an event at the hotel they will use a local catering company for the food. When I arrived I was very hungry. The front desk said they would call me a cab to take me to a local restaurant. The next cab could come in 45 min.! There are no cab companies near the hotel!! So I walked down the street to a local gourmet deli and brought back my lunch. The hotel did give me a plate, silver and a glass of wine when I came back. Great customer service.
Large, dark room. Pretty tacky.

What's the point of a huge room if you can't see most of it? The room we got was huge, but it was so dark I only sat by the few light fixtures scattered around the room. The sofa in the middle of the room was very uncomfortable. Also, the room smelled a little funny. One of the pillows on the bed smelled a bit of BO (not ours!) and the bathroom smelled a bit of sewage. Overall, I was very disappointed. The "spa" doesn't really exist. You need to call an outside number to get an appointment. Be sure to call well ahead of time to set something up because they need to call the therapists in. I tried calling several times the first day but it was constantly busy so I couldn't talk to anyone about setting something up. They also charged for $1 for the phonecall though they agreed to remove after I objected to it. The included breakfast was nice but didn't have things like eggs to order. Overall, I dont think it was worth the money. I've found a lot more charm and comfort at inns that cost half the price.

Beringer Vineyards is the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley, founded in 1876. Jacob Beringer left his home in Mainz, Germany, in 1868 to start a new life in the United States. Jacob bought land with his brother Frederick in 1875 and settled into producing wines comparable to the premium wines he had developed in Europe.
