Best Western Suites In Old Town

This seems a nice hotel and the size of it is not apparent at first sight. Each room has a balcony or is connected to a courtyard which makes outside leisure attainable. I haven't stayed here but have been here to attend an event. I wandered around a bit and really liked the secluded feel. Especially during the evening the cool breeze and tropical vegetation was refreshing after a hot summer day.

The Hacienda is located In Old Town San Diego, about four miles from downtown San Diego / the Gaslamp Quarter.

Unique Quality: What drew my attention to this hotel was the lush landscaping and the atmosphere of this secluded hillside retreat. It is barely noticable from street level and obsured by plenty of tropical plants, yet, it is located only one block from the busiest sections of Old Town.

Acapulco Restaurant & Cantina is the in-house restaurant and their food was pretty good.

Great stay at The Best Western Hacienda

by TripAdvisor Member cobtrnj

Stayed at the Hacienda for 4 nights easter week. Hotel and grounds were beautifual. Our 2 kids 7 and 3 loved the stairs and the fountains. The view of San Diego was beautiful. You could even see the Sea World fireworks from outside the room. The room was very clean, the only problem we had was the toilet wouldn't flush properly and maintenace came up in less than 5 minutes. Our family would return.

A Nice Surprise

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at the Hacienda for 2 nights in the beginning of our vacation and were very impressed with the size of the room. It was spacious and clean and the location was ideal for getting around San Diego. We stayed there again on the last night of our vacation and our room this time was not quite as nice as the first time. Although it was certainly spacious and clean it was a little tired looking compared to the first room. I would still highly recommend this hotel. We enjoyed several great mexican meals at the Cayote Cafe around the corner and my kids loved Cold Stone's ice cream each night. In fact, there were several great restaurants within walking distance. Parking was also free!

Nice and quiet

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband and I stayed here over Christmas. The place was v. quiet almost uninhabited. We loved the convenience to everything in Old Town and the proximity to the trolley. We found the staff extremely helpful and charming. Bell boy even drove us to Fashion Valley Mall to shop b/c was not too busy...above and beyond the call. Found it pricey but definitely charming. Would stay again.

Good Hotel in Great Location

by TripAdvisor Member MonthlyTraveler

The hotel looks grand and historic from Old Town. Aside from the unique setting and the perfect location, the rooms were definitely three-star quality (very plain). No ceiling fan in our room (as was pictured), but the AC worked fine when needed. Water pressure in the shower was iffy. We called the front desk on a couple occasions (one for extra towels and another for an extra pillow) and they were delivered to the room within minutes. The freeway is a few bloacks from the hotel but the hotel is high enough up that we could hear the freeway noise in our room. Didn't keep us up at night and it became unnoticable background noise after a little bit, but it was there.

Old Town was the original downtown San Diego back when the Spanish ran things. Old Town is full of many very popular Mexican restaurants. If you don't make dinner reservations in advance, you will have a 1-2 hour wait wherever you go...except at Acapulco restaurant, which is part of this hotel. But Acapulco is a large chain that doesn't do much in the way of authenticity.

The hotel is a block away from the Old Town Trolley which, despite its name, is really a trolley that takes you on a tour of the city. We did this the first day we were there and, since you could get on and off at any stop (trolleys every half-hour), we found it was a great way to visit some sites that we were happy to see even though we might not have bothered to drive there. And it gave us ideas for where we did want to go back to as well.

The hotel's also 2-3 blocks away from the other "Trolley" which is what S.D. calls its cable cars. There are a couple cable car lines through the city, which seem to cover the important areas (though we didn't try these because we had a car and it was just easier for us to get around by car).

Very disappointed

by TripAdvisor Member limasu

I booked our room at the Hacienda directly with the hotel a few months prior to our stay. On telling the reservationist that we were a family of 5, a deluxe room with 2 queen beds and a sofa bed was suggested. Deluxe cost more than standard, but was bigger so we decided it was worth it. Price was $169 per night with AAA discount. On arriving the room was tiny. It had 2 queen beds and no sofa. Aside from the beds there was minimal walking space. It could not have been smaller! I complained to the front desk and was told that all the rooms in our building were deluxe and that their booking system didn't differentiate between rooms with sofas and without. They had nothing else available so bad luck! They sent up a roll away bed for the fifth person, but left it for us to squeeze in. We had to stack chairs on a table to fit it in! We were not offered a lower rate for the squashy room. I would hate to see a standard room! It also had an awful smell. It was difficult to appreciate anything about the hotel after the disappointment and lack of help.

We would not go back there or recommend it. If you have a booking, get clarification on your room type before you go.

Horrible service.....

by A TripAdvisor Member

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in June 2005. Checking in was disasterous as 4 front desk staff persons could not figure out how to use the computer. The front desk staff were rude and nasty except for Julio. Housekeeping service did not show up until at least 2 pm each day. The room was smelly and very tiny...hardly any room to walk. The fixtures were old and outdated and the room was not very clean. Asking for directions or suggestions was a nightmare as the front desk staff "did not know the area too well". On a postive note, the concierge staff especially Oscar was extremely delightful and helpful. The pool was dirty with lots of debris from trees and the hot tub is very small. They layout of the hotel is one giant maze ...whoever designed this hotel was on serious drugs at the time. There are lots and lots of stairs and the elevators are spread out. We had to take 4 different elevators to our room and they were all scattered in different directions throughout the hotel. The elevators made a ton of noise and I noticed the elevator permits were even expired. The beds were uncomfortable and pillows were worse. The water pressure in the shower is terrible and housekeeping did not replenish our soap or shampoo since the day of arrival. The only thing to do within walking distance is to see Old Town which is not very large and there are only Mexican restaurants nearby --everything also closes at 10 pm so do not expect any late night dinners or drinks. Overall this hotel is probably one of the worst I have ever stayed in and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Wonderful Stay at the Hacienda

by TripAdvisor Member sc9957

Just spent 8 nights (Jun 24 to Jul 2) at the Hacienda (room 807) and had absolutely no complaints. Room was huge (2 double beds) with a microwave, fridge and coffeemaker. We didn't have a couch in our room but you could easily have fit one in with all the space we had. Staff was always pleasant and helpful - often printed us directions to sites, shops and restaurants. Bathroom was large with a generous supply of towels and other bathroom items. Room was always clean when we came back from our morning outings (we usually came back around 1 or 2). The hotel rambles up the side of a hill and is comprised of numerous buildings but we had no difficulty finding our way around and we were given a map of the hotel on arrival. We got two bottles of water each day and parking was also included in the cost (which when I looked at other sites was a considerable savings - some places charged upwards of $25/day). While most of the restaurants within easy walking distance serve Mexican we did find a fantastic Italian restaurant nearby. Also if you have a car it's a quick trip to Hotel Circle/Mission Drive and all the eateries there, or you can trolley downtown to the Gaslamp District and the choice of eateries there is unlimited (trolley is very reasonably priced, easy to get to and from, and beats the hassle of finding parking --- and you don't have to worry about drinking and driving!!). We were able to watch the fireworks from Sea World each night from the comfort of our balcony. Pool was warm and kept clean (yes there were some seeds from the trees nearby but nothing excessive and it was definitely cleaned each day). I had to do a small wash while I was there and the laundry facility was also clean and well maintained. The only thing we didn't experience at the hotel was the onsite restaurant and that was only because we simply ran out of time.

Very nice hotel

by TripAdvisor Member cbpdcop

Hacienda Suites is a very nice hotel that is convenient to most tourist destinations in the San Diego area. Old Town shops, restaurants and historic areas are all within a few blocks of the hotel and SeaWorld, the airport and beaches are just a few minutes drive. The setting is beautiful, service great, rooms a good size and clean. Parking is in a multi-level garage convenient to the building where your room is located. Overall it is a great hotel and we would definately stay again.

Great location

by TripAdvisor Member diinslc

If you don't expect a luxurious resort, you should enjoy your stay at the Hacienda. Request a room with high speed internet when you check in (or better yet, when you make your reservation) and you'll find yourself in the 800 wing. I've stayed there twice, for a week each time, and been happy both times. Our room had a fan, a noisy air conditioner, a refrigerator, microwave, hair dryer and plenty amenitites. You can see the fireworks from Sea World, you don't have to explore the maze to your room, and it's quiet.

The staff was very helpful and made good recommendations. They also got us in that high speed internet room at the last minute!

The location is fantastic, just minutes to walk to any restaurant in Old Town. It's about a five minute walk to the trolley that goes downtown--it's the best way to get to Seaport Village, the Gaslamp District, the Convention Center, and even Petco Park. We bought a three day pass and did it all!

Coming for an exam...

by tucsongirl

I will be in San diego for 2 nights and need a hotel close enough so I can walk up to my institute. My exam starts at 8 A.M. so I dont want to take any chances by staying in a hotel far from the place and at the same time need it to be affordable.

Testing center:
International House San Diego
2725 Congress Street, Suite #2M
San Diego, CA 92110

Thanks in advance.

Within walking distance are Best Western Hacienda Suites Old Town,
Courtyard by Marriott Old Town, and Old Town Western Inn & Suites.

I'd tend to go for the first because it is a bit further from the freeway and less likely to have noise that will disrupt your sleep.

You are also walking distance from a major public transportation hub on Taylor street, so you may find city busses or hotel shuttles to be convenient.

BTW, it is called Old Town Transit Center and is at 4005 Taylor Street.

Welcome to San Diego.

There are four hotels on my Old Town San Diego page and all are a half mile or less from your institute. Of the three that have been mentioned by HB, I'd add that the Hacienda is the nearest, The Western Inn is the least expensive but all are near enough for you to walk to the testing center within a few minutes.

Hope this helps
