Can I exhibit my photographs at San Diego County Fair

by arnowbames

I have heard a lot about the famous San Diego County Fair (www.sdfair.com), the fifth largest Fair in North America that I am really excited to witness it myself. I have booked the flight tickets for San Diego and rooms at California Suites Hotel (http://www.californiasuiteshotel.com). But what I am unsure about is, can I showcase my photography at the Fair? I am a good photographer and would love to exhibit some of my pictures. Can anyone suggest how I can do that?

The application period for an exhibit booth for the 2009 Fair has ended.

As suggested, the "2009 Daylight Photo Shootout" and the "2009 Twilight and Night Photo Shootout" photo contests are probably your only option left.

I have not heard anything good about California Suites Hotel; but thank you so much for advertising the place.

Need a second opinion?

by rickyhunk123

I am eagerly looking forward to a long delayed trip to the Sea World in San Diego. I have heard volumes about it, read about it and seen some awesome pictures and videos. But I have never been there. I love marine life and this trip sure is gonna be a dream come true for me. I have been hunting for some good place to stay, somewhere near the Sea World. Mark, a friend of mine suggested California Suites Hotel, which he says is located nearby and is good value for money. I checked out their web site www.californiasuiteshotel.com/. So far it looks good. But a second opinion is always welcome. Can someone tell me if it is a good budget hotel?

If you keep in mind that you get what you pay for, then yes, I'd say that the California Suites Hotel, which I think is actually a motel, is good value for the price.

However, it is not what I would consider "near" Sea World. It is about nine miles east of the park and would take about an hour getting there by public transportation, fifteen or twenty minutes by car.

The Dana on Mission Bay is actually the nearest hotel to Sea World and the price of a room is a bit more than twice what you'd pay at the California Suites Hotel.

Keep in mind that even if you stayed at The Dana or any place on Mission Bay, where Sea World is located--you'd still have a trek walking to the Park as it is surrounded by quite a bit of land and parking lot.

San Diego Restaurant Week

by jacobmathew

San Diego Restaurant week is an event for people like me who love to experience with food. I am eagerly waiting for September 13 for the food celebration to begin so that I can taste dishes from a wide variety of cuisines. I have heard a lot about the art of dining in San Diego but this will be the first time when I will be attending it. Very excited to attend this food festival and have already booked the flight tickets for San Diego and rooms at the California Suites Hotel. Can anybody guide me about the best restaurants out of the 180 local restaurants that dot the city?

Do you work for the restaurant council of San Diego?

I don't know the whole list of 180, so couldn't give useful advise.

Most of those that I know about are less popular and in need of attention or to be given a chance. There may be a reason for this such as the food is not delicious or even that the restaurant is located off the path that most people travel.

There are a couple that I'd consider the "best." They serve good food and offer an interesting atmosphere such as, Butcher Shop Steakhouse, The Lodge at Torrey Pines, Bertrand at Mister A's and 1500 Ocean at the Hotel del Coronado.

The location of the hotel you're staying at is a bit out of the way too. If you will have access to a car it may not be much of a problem, but if you'll be relying on public transportation, you might find it an inconvenient spot.

In downtown SD gaslamp district Lou & Mickey's(this is the first restaurant on 5th Ave, South end west side.) Great steaks & Seafood. Oceaneer , downtown (great sea food) , Salvatores (great Italian- if lucky owner there and even better), The Butcher Shop Steak House in Chula vista or Kearny Mesa has the Best Prime Rib. (order it medium pink), Blue Oyster has great AHI. Other GREAT places: Mortons, Flemings, Donovans, Top of the Cove, Rainwater,. The Sunday Brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado is Fantastic. Hope this starter list helps. PS. All R's mentioned are high end $$.

Go paragliding at UCSD in La Jolla! Take a paraglider out over the cliffs and cruise over the Pacific Ocean. Fly along the Torrey Pines golf course over Black's Beach and see the sights. Watching the sunset at the beach.

San Diego Tip

by mgard27

The sea lions provide a lot of entertainment. It's fun to watch them swim playfully and then beach themselves. When they're on the shore, it's hard to make heads or tails of them. I don't think we could tell if they were even alive sometimes! Here is one humping along...trying to find a place to rest.

Dinner Time

by vigi

Dying hungry!!! This is our last night in San Diego and we decided to check out Old Town area. I didn't expect there are so many nice restaurants in this little district. We choose to have our dinner at this traditional Mexican place, with live music and freshly made tortilla.

Tijuana is visited by more Americans than any other foreign city. Go to see the cultural differences. You can take the trolley to the border, or drive. Park your car at the last US exit, and walk across into Mexico. Get a cab, have them take you to Avenue Revolution. Get your picture taken with a donkey spray painted to look like a zebra. Chug a watered down margarita.

Yellow Ribbons

by matcrazy1

I noticed yellow ribbons fixed to doors of quite many houses in and around San Diego. What did it mean?

Wearing and otherwise displaying ribbons of various colors is done to remember loved ones far away - yellow ones just for American troops/soldiers sent to the Middle East (Iraq) that time. Am I wrong?
