Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown-Gaslamp

The Courtyard Inn is located in the heart of downtown San Diego, adjacent to the famous Gas Lamp district. The building itself, was originally a bank, and the reception area is behind the bank teller windows making for an interesting welcome. The rooms are small and plain, and parking is non-existent so expect to park on the street (good luck!) or pay $20/day for valet parking. Despite these drawbacks, the location can't be beat and there are dozens of great restaurants within easy walking distance.

Accomodations

The Marriott is a nice place to stay because it is centrally located in the Gaslamp Quarter downtown. It's w/in walking distance of everything shops, restaurants, Ball park, and clubs. It's a bit expensive so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone traveling on a budget. Service is excellent and employees are very helpful.

Unique Quality: The views overlooking the San Diego Bay are amazing and the fresh ocean air is soothing.

Bank lodging!

This hotel is a well preserved old building in downtown San Diego's Gas Lamp district. The building was built in the early 1900's and is about 15 stories high. It originally was a bank.

Unique Quality: Much of the original design from the bank has been kept. The main lobby has very tall ceilings that are painted beautifully. There's lots of marble and wood used in the design and it has been well preserved over the years. The basement contains the original bank vault that now serves as a conference room.

More about Courtyard San Diego Downtown

Good location and value

by TripAdvisor Member chimera22

I stayed here one night for business. The hotel is in a good location downtown within walking distance of the train station/trolley station and a number of restaurants etc.

My room was a nice size and was very clean. My only gripes are that the towels are cheap and small and the in room climate system was not functioning properly. It would only blow cold air.

A couple of nice features include free internet access in the lobby with a printer and a nice on site restaurant/bar.

A great experience at a great hotel

by TripAdvisor Member feiter

We recently stayed at the Downtown Courtyard for business/pleasure, and enjoyed the experience. Having read some of the other reviews before we left, I was a little concerned but was quite pleased with everything.

The old bank building and renovations are wonderful and are much more unique than most hotels. We found the service to be friendly and attentive. The valets rushed to open my wife's door, we had great directions and recommendations from the staff, and our minor concerns were met quickly and politely.

It's tough to beat the location for downtown - you're less than 3 blocks from Gaslamp - which has a month's worth of restaurants, clubs, and bars. We only ate one meal at the hotel, although the bar's happy hour was pretty reasonable. San Diego is pretty easy to get around in, and the hotel is fairly convenient to the interstates and highways, and especially the airport.

We had no issue with noise (probably since we on the 11th floor). The valet parking was a little pricy ($24 a day), but I didn't see many cheaper alternatives. Plan ahead (i.e. send someone down 5-10 minutes ahead to request the car) and you'll be fine.

As a bonus, our room had a glitch with the pay-per-view movie system and we were able to watch for free anytime someone else ordered a movie (including some late-night offerings). Not sure if all rooms are this way, but it was nice

Their Spa Room is huge!!!

by TripAdvisor Member makajka

My husband and stayed at this property for few days before our cruise to Hawaii. Hotel is quite nice. Not far from the cruise ship terminal and also few blocks away from all the restaurants. If you like a room with a lot of space their Spa room is amazing, huge!!! I loved it. Room also offered Fridge, computer Desk. Even free botle of water every day, (most hotels will charge for it). We had aprox. 6 pillows on our bed, very comfortable !!! Nice big gym, but no pool. Make sure you will become a Marriot member to earn points for free stay. Nice and helpfull staff. Nothing negative I can find about this hotel. I hope you will like your stay as much as we did. Michaela

Good location - 3.5 stars

by TripAdvisor Member Wise_One

Only spent two nights here so it was convenience to downtown places that was key.

Basic, typical Courtyard. Nice, comfortable,a bit expensive in my opinion, but that's San Diego.

If you want location a nd convenience I recommend it. If you want more budget, look elsewhere.

Great Place, Super Location

by TripAdvisor Member charlotteguy

This hotel is a short walk to the popular Gaslamp District.

The rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable.

Shower pressure is great.

The breakfast buffet is wonderful and at a good price.

All hotel staff were very friendly and willing to help.

This is a great place to stay while visiting San Diego.

Perfect Spot

Unsurpassed central location for just about everything, gaslamp, waterfront, trolley, and airport. Nice turn of the old bank building into a hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. Stayed 3 nights and was thrilled.
