Holiday Inn !

Holiday Inn Express is located in the downtown area of SD and about seven or eight blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter.

I haven't stayed here but offer it as an option to those on a budget who would want a reliable place to stay. I checked it out for a fellow VT'er who ended up staying there. They were quite pleased with their stay. So, I thought you might like to know about it.

It offers the standard amenities including a free hot breakfast and free shuttle to and from the airport or cruise terminal.

Unique Quality: It has been renovated recently in a casual elegant style. It is a non-smoking hotel. The location isn't the best. Safe, but not most convenient. Yet, it is near enough to public transportation to get to place you might want to visit outside of the downtown area. This hotel is about seven blocks (less than a mile) from the Gaslamp Quarter and just over two miles to Balboa Park, so not really too far from the heart of the city and it's downtown attractions.

It's the price that is great. Not quite as high as other hotels of the same quality.

OK. Not Great!

This hotel is OK. It's fairly cheap, but it's not very pleasant. It's kind of tired and worn out. The parking situation is no good. The elevator is slow. The bathroom is small and parking is sort of inconvenient but not too bad. The price is pretty good, but it's not exactly right in the gaslamp, it's just far enough away to make walking inconvenient. If you can get a similar or slightly higher deal for a place that is in the heart of the gaslamp, I would highly recommend it. We had to cab back from the gaslamp after dinner and drinks, but it would have been great to be close enough to simply stroll everywhere.

Unique Quality: None really. It's pretty tired. Acceptable for a good price, but nothing more.

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average
