More than expected
by savvygirl
The Holiday Inn On the Bay is a hotel that totally blew my expectations! The location was phenomenal (the rooms had a fantastic view of the bay and city) and the workers at the hotel were totally accommodating and pleasant.
Unique Quality: The hotel's location was provided access to San Diego's International Airport, the cruise ship terminal and convention center.

Bay Lodging

I spent a week here as part of a business meeting. I'd say it was not my favorite hotel I've stayed at in downtown SD. But the location gives great access to the waterfront area and close proximity to Gas Lamp happenings.

A Colorful Place!
by lmkluque
This three star hotel is a good choice. All the usual amenities are offered. It is located across the street from the San Diego Bay, not far from the airport, close (Not more than 1-1.5 miles) to The Midway, Seaport Village, The Gaslamp Quarter, the train station, an SD Trolley station and the downtown area in general.
I haven't stayed at this hotel but have had ocassion to stop here several times for various reasons. The people working here have always been very friendly and helpful and seem to try to make everyone feel comfortable.
Unique Quality: When they first painted the two buildings blue and a peachy pink I thought it looked awful and tacky. Guess I'm getting used to the colors, because they are looking nicer each time I see them.
Really, the best thing about the Holiday Inn San Diego - On The Bay is it's location! Very convenient for people are here on vacation.
The Elephant & Castle Pub is just outside the door of the hotel and a great meeting place for locals. The views of bayside activity is entertaining and the food is pretty good.

Affordable
by sunnytraveler
Nothing fancy in this hotel. Basic place to stay at an affordable price. It is right along the bay where the cruise ships dock, (You will hear them sound their horns) and the USS Midway is docked there as well. A word about parking-Hotel parking is $18 per day or a monthly rate of $100. We were there for 7 days so paid the $100 to park-ouch! But I am guessing most hotels downtown are that way.
Unique Quality: Make sure you get a room that is at least 5 floors up so you get a great view of the water. Otherwise you may be blocked by buildings.

A TRAINSPOTTER'S DELIGHT
by blackmasquerade
The hotel is ideally situated with the trolley (C Street and Sante Fe stations), Midway aircraft carrier museum and waterfront all within 5 mins walk and Seaport Village about a 10 minute easy stroll away.
The hotel itself was clean and comfortable and I was allocated a rear facing room with balcony overlooking downtown San Diego. Unfortunately, the noise from the nearby railroad station and crossing was not particularly endearing. Trolleys run approx every 15/30 mins throughout the day and well into the evening and everytime a trolley passed, the noise from the crossing was somewhat distracting. Perhaps the most annoying however, was the noise generated by the mainline trains which run up and down the coast. Each evening, the surfliner train would sit at Sante Fe for literally hours with its thunderous diesel engine running and the driver feeling the urge to sound the mighty horns every so often. I was only there for 2 nights so didn't bother asking for a change of room but would have had no hesitation had my stay been longer.
On a more positive side, the courtesy bus service was welcomed and used to good effect in transferring to the airport.
I was happy with the hotel overall and would certainly stay there again but will request a forward (bay) facing room next time!

Tropical splendor awaits ...

Well at least the outside is colorful!!
.
This hotel looks like a refugee from Miami Beach. However the location cannot be beat for access to the waterfront area and transportation.

Service and atmosphere

Spent five days, on business and pleasure. The location was ideal for my business portion, as I was dealing with the Navy Corps of Engineers, which is located directly behind the hotel. For pleasure, everything that I enjoy, was within easy walking distance. The staff went out of their way to make my visit a very enjoyable experience.
Great Hotel and Great Location
by A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at this Holiday Inn twice during the month of June, 2004, and both experiences were wonderful! The first time was just my family, the second with a group I was leading. All rooms are extremely clean and plenty spacious; the service personnel is also excellent -- I forgot my cell phone and, within five minutes of my call in search of it, not only had the staff found the phone but they'd locked it up in a secure area for me to pick up later. The location is exceptional -- right across the street from the maritime museum, just down Harbor Drive from the Midway, and less than a mile from both Seaport Village and the Gaslamp Quarter. A final piece of advice: reserve early as (1) this hotel WILL fill up and (2) the earlier you reserve, the better rate you'll get.
