San Diego hostel

This hostel downotown is nicely located BUT maybe too close from the nightlife... I didn't sleep very well for the night I spent there. It was a Saturday night, there were a couple of Harleys that were running down on the street for what seemed to be hours and drunk people laughing and fooling around. I wish I had checked in somewhere else...

For The Budget Minded

I've not stayed in this Hostle but have seen it and know people who have stayed here. Actually, HI does not allow residents of the County of SD to stay here.

The thing to keep in mind is that most of the Youth Hostels in the USA have age limits. This hostel will not allow anyone under the age of 12 to stay in a "dorm" room and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Call to make sure. Before reserving a bed, read their Check In requirements .

Unique Quality: The Market Street location, pictured here is in the center of the Gaslamp Quarter. This is one of two hostels in the Gaslamp District I'd recommend because it is so close to everything and the Gaslamp Quarter has so much energy day and night, not only with tourist, but it is a popular place for San Diegans as well!

As with many hostels, HI offers free stuff, such as Pancake Breakfast Everyday -Wi-Fi -Linens and Towels -Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate -Bicycle Parking -Storage upon Check-in or Check-out -Events, Tours and Activities. Not to mention the convenience of staying in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter.

- - -RESERVATIONS- - -

Currently, they are unable to accept reservations and operate on a first come, first serve basis. You may call their Toll Free Telephone number (from within the U.S.) at 1-800-339-7263 on the morning of the day you plan to arrive at the hostel. The staff will be able to give you updated information on available beds and in most cases, be able to keep (or hold) a bed for you for your later arrival that day. Typically, only a few nights in July and August are they full. Their couples rooms usually have a day or two's wait (they only have 6 couples rooms).

- - -PROOF OF INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL- - -

All guests at the hostel must be traveling internationally. This means that they need to see any of the following: current (or recent) visas, international travel tickets, foreign identity papers, Mexican tourist card, or, any similar document showing travel or living outside of the United States to stay with them. They have had many Americans stay with them on their way into or out of the United States. American passports without recent visas are only accepted as identity documents and not accepted as 'proof of travel'

If you are making a road trip,...

If you are making a road trip, backpacking or even looking for a little adventure head down to Ocean Beach knon to us locals as O.B. Once there, you will notice the extreme laid back vibe of everone in the area. Tucked away on the side of Newport Avenue is a small little hostel called 'O.B. Hostel.' There are always alively bunch satying here ready to kick back a beer or even a joint.
I have no idea, I haven't ever actually stayed here, I just know that it looks like a fun place, with intresting people to meet.

Unique Quality: It's the only hostel that I know of anywhere in San Diego.

I stayed at the youth hostel run by Hostelling International. I got my own room and everything was fine. They have open showers though, which freaked me out until I just went for it. Freedom! Pretend you're Japanese. hai!

Accommodation depends on your...

Accommodation depends on your budget. For budget travelers there is certainly only the option to stay at one of the Youth Hostels. There is a real nice one in downtown S.D. on Market Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. The place is very clean, nicely maintained and well equipped. Make sure you make reservations at least a week in advance otherwise you will be disappointed when you see the sign on the entrance saying “Only with Reservation”. You can get the number from the internet. The place is called International House San Diego Downtown. A bed is 27 USD for members and I think 30 for non-members. There are a few other hostels, you can find all of them in the net.

More pricy options are hotels and do not be surprised if the rates are just as high as they are in New York or London. If you do the La Jolla thing then you may wanna stay in either the Holiday Inn La Jolla, which is on La Jolla Blvd about 2 blocks from a very nice beach, or in downtown La Jolla you’ve got the La Jolla Empress, 2 blocks from the Hard Rock Café. Both are pretty nice and you will find rooms from about $ 150.
