Save cash on places to stay
surfNsmiles
  • Updated By surfNsmiles on September 11, 2002
  • When we got to the West Coast, we had hotel reservations for the first night ... then we were winging it the rest of the time. We ended up getting really lucky ... and you can too.

Here's what we did. We went into an area grocery store & picked up a free "area coupon book". This book had a variety of coupons ranging from local attractions to lodging. After getting the book, we would drive to the areas that we wanted to check out. Then found a hotel in walking distance from the book, called them from our cell phones to make reservations. The coupons usually saved us half off the regular prices.

    Enjoy!

One trick that may help you out when bargain hotelling. We found out that when we called most places & told them upfront that we had a coupon, there usual response would be "we are all booked up" ... which was crap. They just didn't want to honor their coupon ... how did we know this you ask? After being turned down by a few hotels, we got a little suspicious ... so after we were told that there was no vacancies ... we called back to the same hotel a few minutes later. To our surprise, by not mentioning that we had a coupon, there was a vacancy available.

To make a long story short, don't mention that you have a coupon until after you confirm that there is a vacancy. Once vacancy is available, they then would have to honor the coupon.

  • There are lost of accomadations around San Diego. But make sure to book ahead of time, especially in the high season (summer) because things usualy tend to fill. Hotels and motels are fine. The last time i went with a friend, we stayed at Quality Inn, which is pretty low budget. But i recommend renting a condo on Mission Beach or Pacific Beach.

When staying in a condo on the beaches, be aware of who your neighbors are. A few times we've had heavy partiers to rowdy couples. But if you're in your prime, i'm sure you wouldn't mind parties, since you could probably just go right on in next door and party. The condos can be 10 meters to 300 meters from the beach... which really isn't that far. Prices seem decent. Some condos come with pools as well as hotels (which doesn't make sense, since you got the beach to go to)

  • We would recommend renting a house on or near the beach. It works out a lot cheaper than staying at the major resorts downtown.

  • Unfotunately, there aren't any cheap places to stay in San Diego. If you are a family and are on a budget, try to arrange a home exchange. There are lots of websites - craigslist.org is a good one. For backpackers, I'm not as sure about lodging rates. If you can, try to find a local person with whom you can stay. (I'm usually up for that - you just have to return the favor when I come to your town!)

Coronado Village Inn: Neat place on Coronado
  • By CDNgirl on May 27, 2003
  • I stayed here on my last trip to San Diego. I was in desperate need of peace and quiet and relaxation, and this place was it!! Its quiet, old in a good way, and just had a really nice homey feel to it. It reminded me of some of the better B&B's in Europe, and location for Coronado couldn't be better. Its just off the main street, Orange St. and a block or two from the beach.

Old, but clean, quiet, and just a really neat atmosphere to it!! You can hear the ocean, if not see it from your room, really nice!!
It is actually officially historical, built in 1926!!

  • I had a ground floor room across from the restaurant patio near one of the rumored several lagoons and it was beautiful! The standard rooms are spacious and lovely. This is definitely a resort with beauty all around. Make a point to stop by and wave to the pink Flamingos in the lagoon out front of the resort!

The spa is small and somewhat unfriendly so I would pass on the spa. The Flamingoes are beautiful and add a friendly ambiance. The staff is friendly and it's a nice place for a romatic weekend or family ventures. This resort is a AAA rated 4 diamond property.
