While this hotel received a five star rating, it falls slightly short in my book. Not that it's not fabulous and luxurious and beautiful but I don't think the service is quite up to five star level. Service in the restaurant has always been slow in my experience and I wasn't all that impressed with their banquet food either. Also, there was some kind of problem with the main water line when I stayed there. It was only for an hour or two, but when that's the hour you have to take a shower it's not good. If you have the $$$, and are a golf fiend go for it. But realize that you can get the same view and same access to the golf course at the Hilton next door...
One of two five star resorts in San Diego County, the Lodge at Torrey Pines boasts an ideal location. It's great for golfers, hikers and birdwatchers with the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course (Buick Invitational) and Torrey Pines State Park adjacent to the property. It's also close to the Torrey Pines Gliderport for hang gliding and near La Jolla Shores and Torrey Pines State Beach for surfers and sunworshippers. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, this Craftsman-style hotel definitely has a unique feel. The front door is gorgeous as is the fireplace in the lobby. A much more intimate feel than most hotels. This place was a great find. I live in San Diego itself, but I stayed here for one night when I had an early morning appointment in the area and was going to have to take a taxi to get there (the appointment was about 25 miles from my home, so the taxi would have been quite expensive). I was quite impressed with the value for money, and very pleased overall. I would definitely recommend it for a place in this category. I also loved the fact that along with the usual Gideons Bible in the room, there was also a copy of The Teachings of Buddha...very nice! You may want to ask for a quiet room--the highway itself isn't so noisy, but the train tracks are on the other side of the highway, and the sound carries across. But it's not bad--I didn't need earplugs or anything.
Completely refurbished older motel property on Highway 101, in the Leucadia/Encinitas area (about 25 miles north of downtown San Diego). No ocean view, but only a few blocks from the beach. Extremely clean, all rooms with kitchenettes (microwave, stove, refrigerator), and continental breakfast included. You certainly can't beat US$54/night plus tax (their internet rate for a room with one queen-size bed). This would be a great base for excursions, both to San Diego itself as well as points north. Hotel Circle is a group of Motels that are convenient to the big attractions; Sea World, Wild Animal Park, Old Town, and Downtown. It is off I-5 and is just minutes from the above. Most of the motels here are very reasonably priced vs the downtown hotels. Most of the major chains are represented here and some independents. Depending on the time of year, the motels offer rooms for as low as $39 a night. If one belongs to an organization or group (AAA, AARP, etc.) one can usually find a discounted rate at these locations. I would recommend staying on Hotel Circle vs downtown because it is easier to get to the area attractions and some even provide free or low-cost shuttle service to the main attractions at certain times of the year. Please contact your travel agent or the attached for price and availability for when you are thinking of traveling to San Diego. by rstary If you can afford it you must stay at least one night at the Hotel del Coronado. ($466/night). We didn't stay there but visited. We stayed at the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido which was very nice and affordable. We had a one bedroom suite which accommodated our family of five very well. $466 US. I inquired through hotwire.com for a hotel on Coronado and they came back with a five star for $266. So if you want to gamble, I think it might be the only five star hotel on the island. (Hotwire doesn't tell you who the hotel is until you book)
Hotel del has a beautiful view of the ocean and it is absolutely filled with old world charm. A five star hotel. Even if you don't stay there you must visit. Theme: HotelComparison: most expensiveDirections: Hotel Del is on Coronado Island and Lawrence Welk Resort is in Escondido.

by frankcanfly A grand hotel, located on the beach on Coronado Island....
|
by frankcanfly Located on Coronado Island, just across the street from the Coronado Hotel.
This hotel has old California (1950's) charm. Large rooms, an outdoor atmosphere and very reasonable prices. This is where I'd stay on my own dollar......
