We did not stay at the famous Hotel Del Coronado ('The Del'). We did visit Coronado to see the hotel and spend time on the beach there.

Residence Inn - La Jolla: Residence Inn - La Jolla

The Residence Inn offers suites or studio rooms with kitchens. There are two pools on the property, plus several outdoor hot tubs and a jacuzzi. Many grills are located on the property for guest use. They also offer free beer, wine, and a light dinner Mon-Thurs evenings. Breakfast is also included in the price of the hotel.

When in San Diego, I usually stay at an economy type
lodging in San Ysidro, which is closer to the Mexico
border and conveniently has a Denny's Restaurant nearby.

These polar bears are a lazy bunch, finding a spot to get
a good photo is quite the task...don't even think of trying to get him to smile!

Actually, since I live in San Diego, I didn't have to worry about staying in any hotel ;-) but from people I've spoke with, I would recommend the highly expensive but wonderful Hotel Del Coronado.

Unique Quality: It is one of San Diego's 'historical monuments.' Famous people have stayed there and according to a TV show, it's been said to be haunted in one particular hotel room but I don't believe in haunted hotels or anything for that matter.

For those who can afford it, I...

For those who can afford it, I recommend staying at (or at least having lunch at)the historic Hotel Del Cornado on Cornado Island. The island is connected to the main land by a large bridge near the down town area and is convenient to the air port.

Unique Quality: This landmark historic wooden hotel is located on the beach and has great ammenities. However, what I liked best is its old almost quaint charm of the type of beach front hotel that has hosted presidents and movie stars. It would be a perfect place for a memorable honey moon.

Mission Blvd.

I generally stay on Mission Blvd., north of Grand Ave. Its a block off the ocean, and therefore cheaper than staying right on the ocean, and I've found them to be fairly clean. The location is great, there is good food, not to mention the ocean, and I feel very safe as a single female traveler walking on the beach at night.

Unique Quality: Price varies sigificantly depending on season and weekend vs. weekday. Some have pools, and are a block off the beach.
