We would recommend renting a house on or near the beach. It works out a lot cheaper than staying at the major resorts downtown.
USD$260

There are lost of...
There are lost of accomadations around San Diego. But make sure to book ahead of time, especially in the high season (summer) because things usualy tend to fill. Hotels and motels are fine. The last time i went with a friend, we stayed at Quality Inn, which is pretty low budget. But i recommend renting a condo on Mission Beach or Pacific Beach.
Unique Quality: When staying in a condo on the beaches, be aware of who your neighbors are. A few times we've had heavy partiers to rowdy couples. But if you're in your prime, i'm sure you wouldn't mind parties, since you could probably just go right on in next door and party. The condos can be 10 meters to 300 meters from the beach... which really isn't that far. Prices seem decent. Some condos come with pools as well as hotels (which doesn't make sense, since you got the beach to go to)

A nice hotel is the Best Western INN BY THE SEA, where we stayed about 5 days in July 1994.
Unique Quality: in July '94 we paid USD 89,-- for a double room, which seemed to be a real good deal for this area and season.

Mission Valley is a central...
Mission Valley is a central place in San Diego to find a hotel. It gives you easy access to the beach, downtown, and the surrounding valleys. Some of my favorites in this area are the Mission Valley Marriot, Doubletree Hotel, or the Radisson Hotel-San Diego.
Unique Quality: Each of these hotels are great.

Hotel Del Coronado: Hotel Del Coronado
$250 per night
Unique Quality: One of the original hotels in the early beginnings of the San Diego area...very historical! Has all the amenities, has been the set for many, many movies. Restaurants and dining areas also famous. Some of the rooms are supposedly haunted. Olympic size pool! World Class Tennis Courts!
