SD Zoo Sleepovers!: Animal Lovers Dream

The San Diego Zoo offers several programs for Children and Adults to spend the night at the Zoo between the months of April and October. This is expensive, but the price of the event goes towards the research and care of the animals that the SD Zoological Society work so hard on.

Each program offered gives the guest an inside/behind the scenes look at the workings of the Zoo's efforts to care for and protect it's animals. This is a fun and educational option for all animal lovers and it is something unique to do.
Check out the Zoo's Sleepover Program website for current prices and dates.

Hotel Del Coronado: Victorian Ocean Front Resort

The historic Hotel Del Coronado was built in 1888 and is an oceanfront resort in San Diego. We drove there from La Jolla where we were visiting family members. Our intention was to come for the extensive Sunday Brunch, located in the Crown Room--a very elegant restaurant.

Hotel Del Coronado overlooks a wide stretch of beach. The hotel is luxurious and overflowing with class. The moment one enters, the fine details and quality furnishings place this a step above the ordinary. The Travel Channel proclaimed it "the number one destination for weddings"--who wouldn't want to begin their life of bliss here! USA Today christened this luxurious landmark "one of the top ten resorts in the world".

There are 679 recently remodeled rooms; guests have three options for lodging:

The Victorian Building-where you'll experience 19th century ambiance
Ocean Towers and California Cabanas-offering contemporary rooms
Beach Village-cottage and villas

A spa is open daily from 8am-8pm and just waiting for you to make your reservation! A schedule of kid and adult activities is prepared each day.

Elegant oceanside resort

Various Hotels: Hotel Circle

Hotel Circle is a group of Motels that are convenient to the big attractions; Sea World, Wild Animal Park, Old Town, and Downtown.
It is off I-5 and is just minutes from the above. Most of the motels here are very reasonably priced vs the downtown hotels. Most of the major chains are represented here and some independents.
Depending on the time of year, the motels offer rooms for as low as $39 a night. If one belongs to an organization or group (AAA, AARP, etc.) one can usually find a discounted rate at these locations.
I would recommend staying on Hotel Circle vs downtown because it is easier to get to the area attractions and some even provide free or low-cost shuttle service to the main attractions at certain times of the year.
Please contact your travel agent or the attached for price and availability for when you are thinking of traveling to San Diego.

Sun Harbor Motel: Funky Lodging, Great Location.

We had a great time there. It was funky, like an old Route 66 motel, but fun. Owners friendly. Great Mexican food right across the street. One block west of Denny's.

Hotel del Coronado: Elegent with a great location

Was in L.A. on business last fall and went down to San Diego to visit friends that had retired there. Their retirement home was in a state of chaos as they remodeled every room, so opted to stay here at the del Coronado, right down the street from their new home.
What a hotel! Been around for ages with a great past of being a vacation resort to the stars. But the last time I had seen it (for dinner about 20 years ago) it was looking run down and faded. Not anymore!!
La Costa Resorts have bought the property and have sunk millions into returning it to its past glory and then some. All areas, public and private, are just gorgeous. My room, in the Victorian wing had a partial ocean view was was generous in size with all the ammenities.
Highly recommend!!

A word of advice - many of the room in the Victorian wing have no view and are very small. Use caution.

Too many unique qualities to list, but top on my list is the hotel's location. On an island across from downtown San Diego, the hotel provide a boat shuttle to and from the San Diego marina if it's city life you want. Or just stay on the grounds with one of the nicest beaches in San Diego right there.

Mike's Place: Cozy, private and romantic!

Mike's Place is a wonderful guest cottage behind in the historic Hillcrest district. This place has charm, romance and privacy for its guests among other things. The owners Mike and Larry are as wonderful of men as they come just warm and accommodating.

With a short walk across the bridge there are shops, restaurants, clubs and bars. So much to chose from you wouldn't need to leave the area.

We stay here everytime we go to San Diego.. cant imagine staying anywhere else!

Situated in the heart of Hillcrest
Private outdoor shower
Private entrance
Beautiful property

El Cordova Hotel

Located on Coronado Island, just across the street from the Coronado Hotel.

This hotel has old California (1950's) charm. Large rooms, an outdoor atmosphere and very reasonable prices. This is where I'd stay on my own dollar......

Hotel Del Coronado: The most famous hotel of San Diego County

I didn't live there (not for my budget) but I would like, maybe for 1-2 nights. I just visited that hotel - the interiors look very nice and the location in front of Coronado Beach and the Pacific Ocean is amazing.

As a National Historic Landmark, the Hotel Del has a rich and colorful heritage. From Marilyn Monroe to Charles Lindbergh, from state dinners to the ghost of Kate Morgan, The Del is a fascinating American treasure with over 115 years of stories to tell.

Location, unusual wooden architecture.

Holiday Inn Harbor View: Holiday Inn Harbor View

The Holiday Inn Harbor View is a circular building in downtown San Diego that is easy to spot from the surrounding area. Because it is circular, the rooms are an odd slice of pie shape... But, the hotel is clean, friendly and conveniently located just a few blocks from the harbor, the train, the airport, and the Gas Lamp District. Be careful of the one-way streets!

The Ocean Inn: Good value in Coastal North San Diego County

This place was a great find. I live in San Diego itself, but I stayed here for one night when I had an early morning appointment in the area and was going to have to take a taxi to get there (the appointment was about 25 miles from my home, so the taxi would have been quite expensive). I was quite impressed with the value for money, and very pleased overall. I would definitely recommend it for a place in this category. I also loved the fact that along with the usual Gideons Bible in the room, there was also a copy of The Teachings of Buddha...very nice!

You may want to ask for a quiet room--the highway itself isn't so noisy, but the train tracks are on the other side of the highway, and the sound carries across. But it's not bad--I didn't need earplugs or anything.

Completely refurbished older motel property on Highway 101, in the Leucadia/Encinitas area (about 25 miles north of downtown San Diego). No ocean view, but only a few blocks from the beach. Extremely clean, all rooms with kitchenettes (microwave, stove, refrigerator), and continental breakfast included. You certainly can't beat US$54/night plus tax (their internet rate for a room with one queen-size bed). This would be a great base for excursions, both to San Diego itself as well as points north.

Hotel Del Coronado: Hotel Del Coronado

Even if you don't stay at this unique hotel, you must stop in for a visit. The basement houses several nice (read expensive) shops, and the walls are lined with photos of famous guests and historic hotel events.

Hotel Del Coronado ('The Del')

Hotel Del Coronado ('The Del')
$250+ for a standard room

Ever seen 'Some Like It Hot' with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon? Ever hear where the King of England met Wallis Simpson?

This Victorian landmark has had it's fair share of celebrities. It's been renovated and remodeled but retains it's historic charm. There are three main sections: the Victorian Wing, the California Cabanas and the Towers. The Victorian Wing is the original building, the latter two have been added.

What's special about the Del? The history and the views. It is NOT the accommodations or the price. You are paying for the history, not for modern conveniences. But do be sure to check out Mootime Ice Creamery!
