Jazz & used books shops in San Diego?

by MariusG

Hi guys. I am planning to come to San Diego for a couple of days and I am looking for jazz CD and used book shops within a walking distance from the Convention Center. Any recommendation will be apprecaited. Thanks in advance.

Hi Marius,

The only place I can think of within walking distance of the Convention Center that would sell books, not actually used, and possibly Jazz CD's would be Upstart and Crow coffeehouse in Seaport Village.

There are/were two bookstores that sell used books in the downtown area: Bargain Bookstore at 1033 Eighth Ave., and Wahrenbrock’s Book House at 726 Broadway at 7th, but I haven't paid attention and don't know if they are still in business.

Also, near the Convention Center there was a great big antique type market that also sold used books, called The Old Cracker Factory Barrel at Market and Columbia streets, actually almost across the street from the CC.

There have been so many changes in that area the it might have been closed--I haven't actually noticed lately. However, it might have changed names to Cracker Factory Antiques Shopping Center and move to 2400 Kettner Blvd.

On Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, further out, but can be reached by public transportation is "Antique Row," which includes several well packed used book shops.

As for jazz CD's, you might try Sam Goody at Horton Plaza. Also it might be interesting to stop one evening at Croce's Bar on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter, which specializes in live jazz and there you might be given a better suggestion where you can buy good jazz CD's.

Travel Tips for San Diego

Most beautiful part of town

by KaiM

Visit Old Town San Diego. 1850´s style still alive. A western town with Spanish flair. I´ve been to San Diego for a day trip during a stay in Los Angeles. I really enjoyed the drive from L.A. to San Diego along the shoreline with its beautiful beaches.

1) Go to the far end of Harbor Island at sunset so you can look back at the city and watch it turn gold;

2) Visit the Torrey Pines Glider Port and watch the hang gliders, paragliders and sail planes soar off the cliffs and out over the beach below;

3) Take a walk along Fort Stockton Drive and Sunset Blvd. in Mission Hills and look at some of the finest examples of early 1900s architecture in the city;

4) Visit Children's Pool in La Jolla in the early evening and watch all of the seals come up on the beach to sleep;

5) Visit Sunny Jim's Cave in La Jolla

Gaslamp Quarter

by vigi

What a productive day. Instead of resting back in hotel, we head over to Gaslamp Quarter after dark for dinner. A bit disappointed was that there's no real gaslamp in this gaslamp quarter, they are all fake electronic lamp!!! Well, it's a nice place, but it's more like a tourists places than I thought!

San Diego has a growing gay...

by jayhawk2000

San Diego has a growing gay community, centred on the Hillcrest neighbourhood. You may want to do some shopping at Gay Mart and International Male before heading to Hamburger Mary’s for a hearty sandwich or huge fruit plate. As the sun sets there are a range of night spots, including country & western saloons, plush piano bars and strip clubs. Look for the local Gay & Lesbian Times for listings. The friendly Convention & Visitors Bureau can be reached by ringing 619/232-1707 or at www.sandiego.org. If you've come to San Dieog for upscale shopping (Nordstrom, Macy’s, Louis Vuitton and the like), head to Horton Plaza. The nearby Gaslamp Quarter has less glitz and more antique shops. A shopping hint: anything with a “Hecho en Mexico” sticker has been imported across the border and probably costs much less in nearby Tijuana than in San Diego, although there are wholesalers who can offer bulk discounts north of the border. However, Tijuana has incredibly inexpensive tequila and pharmaceuticals.

Watching planes over San Diego

by matcrazy1

Do you like to watch flying planes?

Go to Pan American Plaza at Balboa Park where San Diego Aerospace Museum is located (is it a coincidence?) and look up - every 3-5 min. I saw an airplane flying lower and lower towards Lindbergh Field International Airport located at the Pacific coast.

Airplanes go from the inland to land, they take off towards the Pacific Ocean.
