    Ocean Beach Motel Has Grown-Up!

    by

This hotel is located in the Community of Ocean Beach, which is about six and a half miles from downtown San Diego and after crossing Abbot Street from this hotel you will be at the beach.

The first time I saw the Ocean Beach Motel, it was painted pink and looked a bit shabby, but still it was the place I would have chosen to stay if I hadn't lived so near. Since then, the family owned and operated motel has been revitalized and given a promotion in status from motel to Boutique Hotel.

Based on price and location, this is the hotel I'd stay at in San Diego if on a budget and wanted to be near the Pacific Ocean.

Unique Quality: At the time of writing this the price of a room was $79.00 to $119.00 per night and the most unique quality of this hotel, considering it's location. Any farther west and it would be on the sand and probably washed away like the Amusement park built up where Dog Beach is now! They do allow up to two dogs in ground level rooms.

The corner of Abbot Street and Newport Avenue is the starting point for all the action in Ocean Beach. The beach is west, pier is just south, shopping, restaurants and bars are east and to the north are more restaurants, shopping, a park and Dog Beach.

The rooms seem to be organized to allow either a courtyard view or an ocean view. Parking is free and in this community that is a real convenience, especially since everything is within walking distance--even for me.

If it is the funky California Beach community you want to experience this would be the place. Take a look at my Ocean Beach, to get an idea if this is a great place for you.

Loved the Ocean Beach Hotel....right ON the beach !!

by A TripAdvisor Member

The wonderfully remodeled hotel was nicely furnished, comfortable, with a great staff !! Our room rate was great and staying AT the beach (100 feet from our room) was THE BEST !! We also liked all the restaurants and shops that were just steps from the hotel,up and down Newport Avenue.

Beaches in the Area

by lmkluque

If it is the beach you're looking forward to, I'd suggest that which one you spend most time at would depend upon your income level and tastes.

Ocean Beach is a "funky,""let it flow" type of place and the main street, Newport Avenue is full of restaurants and bars, and the Ocean Beach Hotel is just across the street from the Ocean.

Mission Beach/Bay is pretty much the tourist haven beach area. It has a "California Beach Type" amusement park and a clump of hotels and it does have a few bars including Canes Bar & Grill located right on the boardwalk.

Pacific Beach, as already reported is actually one of the most popular beach communities, especially for the collage aged, but with the new alcohol ban at the beach it's not quite so "over the top" these days.

La Jolla is more up-scale, but still a great place for beach activities. The "Coves" area is beautiful and can be adventureous, the Shores offers swimming, as well as kayaking, divin and other watersports.

I would add that currently there is a Smoking and Drinking ban at all beaches in the city of San Diego.

>>>Any advice on Tiguana trips? Is it worth going or is it just a half hearted view of Mexico?

Just going to the "tourist" area of Tijuana might not represent the "real" Mexico to those who look superficially, but there is much more to Tijuana than Avenida Revolucion. If you will be in the San Diego area for only three days, I'd say you might not really have the time to spare.

However, Playas de Tijuana is not a tourist spot and if you went there--the Tijuana beach--you would see the real Mexico.

Actually one of my favorite places in Rosarito Beach (just south of Tijuana) is "Calafia" and stopping there for a couple of drinks before going on to Puerto Nuevo for lobster is worth a daytrip to my way of thinking.

I have pages on these places too if you are interested.

To be continued....

Dramatic change and very pleasant surprise !

Raised 'n retired in San Diego and, having been away for the past five year's, it was to our surprise and pleasure to re-discover an OCEAN BEACH HOTEL who's new Owner's had finally taken full advantage of its location and fulfilled its potential to the max. Off the beat'n path of most tourist's and void of the hastles of traffic congestion and beach parking, the Hotel offered us a beach front setting with spectacular views, clean rooms with staff efficiency above the norm of most major establishments and a most personal down-home touch to all their recent up-grades. Easy walking distance to a variety of popular restaurant's ... very casual in nature ... there's also entertainment to be had, sports fishing, aquatic sports, beautiful beach walks and perhaps most important, a quite room with a clean and comfortable bed awaiting when one's day has been completely exhausted. We were so taken that we went out of our way to meet the new Owner's, congratulate them and upon our return to San Diego there's absolutely no question as to where we'll be staying.

Sincerely,
Bill from Louisville, Kentucky

LOVELY HOTEL

My boyfriend I booked this very last minute as the other accomodation we were staying in over in the pacific beach area of san diego had double booked our room for our last night in town, we were a bit wary of staying in a two star hotel but the price was right, $90 for a thursday night and it was only for one night so we took our chances. The hotel was very nice, we had a room with a courtside view, which really means no view at all, but this didnt bother us as we were a stones throw from the ocean and everything else we needed was right nearby.....restaurants, bars etc. The hotel was clean, our room was average sized, the bathroom a bit on the small side but otherwise fine and the shower was great. All basics were provided....tv, fridge, towels....as you would expect. The hotel had a lovely garden and an amazing ocean view and we found the staff here very pleasant and courteous. As far as the general area goes we both much preferred the Pacific Beach area to Ocean Beach. Ocean beach is much more quiet and probably more suited to older people, we are both in our early twenties and Pacific Beach had a great buzz about it. As far as the actual beaches are concerned, again Pacific Beach wins, it was much longer with a proper boardwalk type area for cycling/roller-blading etc with many shops, cafes and restaurants right along the beach, whereas Ocean Beach had none of this although Newport avenue had many shops and esp antique outlets...again prob for the older generation, even Mission Beach has a bit more going for it. We probably would stay here again if we were presented with the same situation i.e. no rooms available in Pacific beach....but we would prefer to be where the party is!

Yuck!

Stayed at the Ocean Beach Motel over New Year's. The location was great but, that was it. The carpet was covered in stains, and the room had a faint odor of dog. The bathroom floor was stained with an orange/red subtance with long hairs sticking to it. The wall was also crumbling apart near the baseboard, and the bathroom door was splattered with dirt. When I woke up the next morning I had two bug bites on my chin. This room made me feel disgusting, and I walked around wearing my flip flops at all times. Would never stay here again.

A great hotel with a great location

by TripAdvisor Member shermanstreet

My husband and I stayed at this hotel over the new year's holiday. The weather was less than we expected but we had great views of the crashing waves right from our balcony. You cannot get ocean views for this price anywhere else!!! The staff was remarkable and it was a real treat to meet the couple that runs the hotel. They gave great recommendations on where to eat in the area.

Great Value, great time!

If you looking for a nice hotel, right on the beach, with a friendly staff, and great prices, then this is your hotel. Both my wife and I were so impressed with the cleanliness of the rooms (we even tipped the maids) and the warm friendly feeling of the staff and the surrounding community. We rarely got in our car to go anywhere. Ton's of restaurants and pubs, tidepools, nice clean beach, and a wonderful pier. In the mornings we loved to stroll on the pier and watch the pelicans dive for their meal or watch the surfers "shoot the pier". The bathrooms are a little small, but who spends that much time in the bathroom when you're on holiday anyway. It's family owned and operated and we even met the owner pruning the rose bushes that surround the beautiful fountain in the main courtyard. Our room had a refrigerator and microwave oven and an ironing board and iron. We had a balcony that overlooked the pier and ocean, with a nice table and chairs that were great for morning coffee. We would recommend this hotel to anyone that likes a little getaway at a reasonable price.

Great Beach Location and Value

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed in an ocean view room Mar 7-9. Overall, we were very pleased. The room was recently remodeled, and the location great! All the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful meal at the Ocean Beach Grill across the street – loved the fish tacos! Also had great breakfasts at the Townhouse. We were there on a Wed. and the Farmers Market was great fun. Don’t miss the Cliffs at sunset. There were a few cons (listed below), but the pros far exceeded them.
Pros: LOCATION! To stay in an ocean front hotel at under $100 was remarkable. Ocean Beach is convenient to all the San Diego sights, plus has its own charm. The rooms had a Queen bed, microwave, and refrigerator. Rooms were relatively clean.
Cons: Small Rooms – 2 adults and 2 small suitcases filled it up! Noisy but solved this by turning on the air conditioner fan. No elevator –not a problem for us, but be aware of a possible 3-floor climb. Would have loved a coffee maker!
Summary: If you want a slick, modern hotel – this isn’t for you. If you love the ocean and mixing with locals, you’ll love Ocean Beach.

Beach hotels

Hello,

I'm planning on spending a few days near the beach in San Diego and am looking for a hotel not to far away, similar to a Best Western in standard. I'd like to hire a surfboard for a few days and stay near the beach. Does anyone have any recommendations?

thanks

Good surfing in many areas. Near the beach, means walking distance. Try Pacific Beach for motels. As for surfing related topics try website: http://home.san.r.r.com/klm/lkynnster/bodyboard.html
