I thought about bidding on Priceline for a hotel in downtown or in La Jolla but I started adding up all the extras-parking, breakfast and even charges to use the health club at one of the hotels in La Jolla and decided just to book a regular hotel.
The Old Town Inn doesn't charge for anything except the room, the parking is free, there is an included breakfast and they even have a computer set up where you can check your email or directions for free.
The only downside was that it was a little noisy with the freeway traffic/Pacific Highway traffic and occasional planes overhead but that decreased as the night wore on. It's not actually inside of Old Town, when I was driving there I thought I was in the wrong place because I was on a stretch of highway with some industrial property. But it's just a block from the trolley station and another 5 minute walk and you are in Old Town.
What attracted me to this property was it's location near Old Town, convenient to the Old Town trolley station, close enough to walk to Old Town plus the added benefit of free parking and easy access from I-5 if you are driving. By trolley it was only about 10 minutes to downtown so the location was very convenient.
Room-spacious and more than adequate for a place just to sleep in, it wasn't charming but it was clean and the bed comfortable. I had to change rooms during my visit because the cheaper 1 Queen bed room was booked for part of my stay so I transferred to a double queen smoking room. The room smelled a bit but it wasn't something that really affected my stay. The 1st night was $69+tax, the 2nd two nights $94+tax. On October 2008, it $80+ tax for the two of us for an economy queen room.
Bathroom-shower was fine, bring your own toiletries as all they have is bar soap and shampoo. There was a hair dryer. Towels are adequate.
Breakfast-you can make your own waffles, they also have pastries, fruit, cereal, toast, juice, coffee and tea.
There is an outdoor pool but I didn't use it.
