In a downtown with a coupon :-)

Generally there are NO inexpensive ($40 or so) and comfortable, clean and safe accommodations in downtowns of big American cities including San Diego but if you use discount COUPONS...

Where to get the coupons from?
I took them from rest area at I-5, available in rest areas on freeways, at welcome/visitors centers, sometimes in supermarkets, travel stores and gas stations.

I used the discount coupons from a leaflet on my picture in California and Nevada. There are 2 hotels in the heart of San Diego downtown there: Pickwick Hotel and a little more expensive Comfort Inn.

Prices with coupons (must present coupon at check in; based on availability):
Pickwick Hotel $59.95 + tax for 1-4 people (add $5 Fri & Sat),

Comfort Inn was $69.95 + tax for 1-2 people (add $20 Sat) - hmm... a little much for Saturday especially.

Unique Quality: Newly renovated (NOT all rooms).

Location, location, location - across from Horton Plaza, walk to Gaslamp District, Marina, trolley (trip to Mexico :-), Seaport Village, Restaurants & Entertainment.

Children stay FREE!

Underground parking, cable TV, guest laundry.

Easy access: next door to Greyhound (long distance scheduled buses), 5 blocks to Amtrak (train)

NO breakfast but many restaurants/cafes just outside.
